Re: Minnesota Crunchers

The endless rain in Seattle is upon us for the past month or two. At least no snow!

On a separate note, I’m trying to put together another system. Newegg is dreadful on small items with their free shipping. I have a SSD drive I have been trying to get since Nov 1. The first one was last in shipping, the replacement appears to be lost as well. Larger items come quickly, but the cheap items are a pain and I am considering alternative vendors for this gear.

What kind of specs are you looking at for this new system ?

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

There is a nice review of Alder Lake at Tom's Hardware . From browsing through the review, it appears Alder Lake is pretty snappy for the price.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I'd like to introduce a new member to my team:

CPU: Intel i5-12600K (Alder Lake)
Cores: 6P+4E = 16 Threads
OS: Windows 11
GPU: Intel on-chip 770
Graphics card: none

I'm still trying to figure things out and getting Windows11 situated. But I do have Boinc running. some initial findings so far with 75% CPU workload:
1) Open pandemics tasks take about 1h45m
2) Cancer markets task take about 55m
3) no GPU tasks yet but for einstine@home it takes about 1h as compared to the 6hrs on my Haswell chip.

Today I'm going to get my machine learning stuff i(trying to teach myself) installed and that's where I hope the real improvements are found!

One added benefit for winter: It really warms the room at 100% CPU and 100% utilization! I had to scale it back to 50% CPUs, 75% utilization to keep it reasonable.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

That sounds pretty encouraging. I'll bet with some further tweaking of the system and Win 11 you will see further improvements.Good luck.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I actually got some Help stop TB work units! I saw it on the screen saver and checked the work list. Those have been scarce for a long time! I might be able to improve my 14d badge!

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

If you keep the option open eventually a few fish find their way into the net. (Really bad mixed metaphor - sorry). I pretty much stopped HST after I got to a ways over 2 years, because I figure there are plenty of badge hunters who would like to get a few now and then. And the scientists can only produce so much because of the way the new work units depend on the already crunched ones. I am pretty sure there is no lack of crunching power when it comes to HST, just a lack of supply. Right now I am running about 70% MCM and 30% OPN with just an occasional ARP now and then just to change things up a bit.
The theater of seasons is here now. 51F(10.5C) yesterday with rain, wind and snow to 10F (-12C) now is a bit of a change. Thank goodness we did not get the tornadoes they had in southern Minnesota over night. But my car doors were frozen shut this morning.
I hope everybody is safe sound and well yet.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

My folks few in from Minnesota for Christmas week. It is nice to have them here in Seattle area. We might head up to Leavenworth Washinton (in the Cascades). My daughter calls it "Christmas town". Its a Bavarian town which is all decorated for Christmas and always has snow. My dad will enjoy the German beer. Have a great week everyone.

I see the West Coast is scheduled to get quite a bit of snow in the coming days, although it looks like most of it will be south of Washington. I hope your dad enjoys the German beer. For treat every Christmas, my wife gets me a six pack of assorted German beers, which takes me about 10 months to consume. Just makes a nice treat now and then. I hope your parents enjoy the visit.
Cheers
