Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I see our points went up more today from yesterday. Going to bump my gpu a little more to see how it goes.

Just a bit short of yesterday, but still the second best day ever.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

How many gpu wu's are you crunching at a time?
On my Windows system with a Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti GPU, I'm running 16 GPU WUs at a time with 1 CPU thread per GPU WU. I found that anything less (either less than 16 concurrent GPU WUs or reducing the CPU thread below 1 per GPU WU) would not keep the GPU fully utilized. On that system, I'm seeing 18-19 million WCG points per day. On my Windows system with a Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti, I'm running 4 GPU WUs at a time with 1 CPU thread per GPU WU. For that card, 4 GPU WUs seemed to do the trick to keep that card at full utilization and has produced 2.3-2.7 million WCG points per day. As others have mentioned, it seems like the sweet spot is different for different cards, so I experimented while monitoring GPU utilization until the GPU was consistently under full load. For my systems that have integrated Intel GPUs, I've left those running a single GPU WU at a time.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Anyone play around with the app config file in reference to the cpu usage? I bumped it up a little but not sure if that helps or not.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

mbotmiller, are you using a config.xml file to control things? can you past in a message as an example so I can compare? I'm new to creating/editing the file.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Here is how mine is crunching 6 at a time on my hex system:

<app_config>
<app>
<name>opng</name>
<fraction_done_exact/>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.15</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>1</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

Element6, yes, I am using an app_config.xml file to control the number of GPU tasks and what fraction of a CPU thread is reserved for each GPU task. Mine is very similar to Bearcat's example - the main difference with the example below is that I had one computer that had both a discrete Nvidia GPU and an integrated Intel GPU and I only wanted the integrated Intel GPU to be running one GPU task at a time while having the discrete GPU running more than one at a time. In the example below, it should result in 10 GPU tasks running at the same time on the discrete GPU with up to 1 CPU thread reserved per GPU task. The app_config.xml file gets placed into the C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\www.worldcommunitygrid.org folder (or at least that is the default location on Windows) or /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org on a macOS system. Once the file is there, in the BOINC manager you can go to Options --> 'Read config files' and that should cause the settings from the app_config.xml file to go into effect. I'm definitely not an expert at this either, but very happy to share what's worked for me!

<app_config>
<app>
<name>opng</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>.1</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>1</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
<app_version>
<app_name>opng</app_name>
<plan_class>opencl_intel_gpu_102</plan_class>
<ngpus>1</ngpus>
</app_version>
</app_config>

I have played around with that a bit on a few different systems. On Windows systems with Nvidia graphics cards, I've found it best to leave it at 1 and not go below that. When I reduced it below 1 on those systems, I started seeing my average GPU utilization go down. I don't have a Linux system running WCG right now so I haven't played with that OS and how it might effect what the optimal CPU to GPU ratio would be for these OPNG WUs. On a macOS system that has a discrete AMD GPU, I've lowered the CPU usage down to .5 and it seems like it is doing OK, although I haven't found a very robust way to monitor the discrete AMD GPU utilization as the Activity Monitor GPU History monitoring on macOS isn't as nice as the options you get using Windows' Task Manager performance tab looking at the GPU in my opinion.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Thanks mbotmiller. I like how you made adjustments for the integrated (Intel) GPU. I used your file and now the intel gpu has just one task.

I like it!

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Am observing something weird. Looking at my AMD software performance and after I suspend crunching, my GPU is still at full throttle, but everything else seems to drop. Just updated it today and still doing it. Anyone else see this?
