SD Surfer, I say this, even with a risk of you surpassing me quicker. I took a look at your computers (thanks for making them public). You have an i7-6th gen computer with an Nvidia GPU. I noticed it did NOT list the Intel GPU as well. Is that system pulling GPU units for BOTH the Nvidia and Intel?
----------------------------------------My i3-4th Gen is pulling both GPU work units. if you want both, maybe look into the preferences to allow intel GPU? or update the intel OpenCL drivers? link to my i3, you can see both the nvidia and Intel GPU: https://stats.free-dc.org/host/bwcg/7766927

Got 10 GPU wu's crunching now after finding the information in the GPU thread. Just hope they all validate fine and my GPU doesn't fry.

Backed it off to 4 after seeing a little weird stuff on the screen. Will let this go for the night and check results in the morning.

Another banner day. Whatever gpu's some of you are using is really putting the work units through. Maybe they will see the benefit of providing a steady stream of gpu units and help this project get to the finish line that much quicker. The points are nice, but getting the work is the important part. Keep up the good work.

bearcat,
----------------------------------------I notice screen sluggishness on the GPU which is crunching and driving the monitor. What I do: 1) Set GPU to not crunch while computer is in use 2) Suspend computation if im doing something important. BTW, It is related to WCG. I crunch GPUs on Einstine@home and there is not any noticeable lag. But I want WCG points now, so I power through it.

I just suspend crunching if I need to do something. Almost screwed up when I made the app_config file. Copied someones file that used a intel gpu and didn't catch it until I started getting weird messages in boinc after restarting boinc. Re made the file correctly and now its doing fine. Just looked at the completed wu's and so far no issues. Going to bump it up a little and see how it goes. I need to find a gpu that will work in my AMD cruncher. The GT 720 with 1 GB of DDR3 I currently have installed won't cut it crunching.

I have not seen any significant lag or artifacts while using the computers with the newer GPU's. Haven't done anything too taxing on them though, just light gaming, watching videos, internet stuff, etc. Nothing I've had to suspend crunching for.
Bearcat, that rx580 should be a good cruncher, looks like you got multiple work units figured out. Used to be back in the HCC GPU days OpenCL was better on the AMD cards. These days it looks like Nvidia is just as good if not better. Hope you are able to find a good card to go along with the 16 core if you got that route. The work units are still flowing for now, and we keep on crunching crunching. Good day. |

Waiting on newegg to have a sale on the 16 core. Since my current AMD cruncher doesn't support a full length card, will build one with a good motherboard. Right now newegg has the 5800X 8 core for $434 on sale. Figure go big or go home and shop for a 16 core 3950X which newegg has for $800. Will shop around though for deals to get that price down. Think I was one of the 1st to return a gpu wu on HCC. The good ol days. All these projects should be using a GPU to crunch since its so much faster. How many gpu wu's are you crunching at a time?

Usually running about 8 at a time per GPU. In my experience sometimes work units hang if trying to run too many at a time, and if not running enough tasks, GPU is underutilized at times. It takes a bit of experimenting with each set up.

All these projects should be using a GPU to crunch since its so much faster. That sure would be nice to speed up the science that way. Unfortunately, not every process can computed in a parallel fashion. We are lucky they can beak down the process enough so it can be computed with consumer level hardware. I recall with the Clean Energy Project there was a bit of complaining and consternation about the size of the work units, how long they took, and the number of read/writes which each work unit needed. One of the people behind the software gave a little explanation about the work required to do computations in quantum chemistry. My guess is if they could have ported their software to run on gpu's they would have done it. An analogy I heard once is that backhoes are much quicker at digging holes than shovels, (both being good tools), but each is worthless if your job is to do the framing. There are some great tools out there, but not every one is the right tool for the job. A couple of my crunchers experienced hung downloads. They are only doing cpu work. I am glad it was not all of them. Not wanting to mess around a lot, I just did a restart and they took off again. It is one of the mysteries of life why it only affected 2 out of the 5 machines all on the same KVM and same switch. Hope you find that deal on the 16 core and you have a good build. Cheers
Sgt. Joe
