Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Woke up this morning to a dead computer. Left hyperthreading on but dropped it down to 10 to see if it will stay cool enough. Does MCM crunch hotter that the other projects? Didn't have this issue with fighting aides 2.

I don't think it crunches any hotter. I run everything at 100%. Looks like hyperthreading may be the culprit ???? If so, but why ???
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Will see when I get off work if it's still running. If not, will shut off hyper threading until I get time to apply new thermal paste. Will have to monitor the one processor that shows higher voltage than the other.

If it turns out that despite all of your efforts to troubleshoot this thing, you might want to look at something similar. You could swap in your 5670's for the 5650's.
You could do worse than this

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

It was still running when I got home. Hyperthreading enabled so 24 threads but only 10 wu's crunching. Just bumped it up to 12 wu's. Will see how it does overnight. Aren't those 1U servers loud? Thats temping.

They are noisy on startup for sure. But, once they get going, I don't think they are too bad. Mine are running in the shed, so whatever noise they make doesn't bother me. When I check on the 4 of them, they don't seem to be especially noisy.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

My 1st dual processor system I built (before westmere), I tried fans for 1U not knowing much. Sounded like a ticked off bumble bee attacking. Hopefully I can hang with my current dual system for awhile. Came across someone selling a dell system with dual E5-2620 . Wants $700 so a bit much for me. But I could put some serious 8 cores in it fairly cheap if I did get it.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

So far it’s running stable with good temps. Running 22 threads with turbo off. Locked at 2.9 GHz. Going to leave it alone for awhile before I try anything else.

That sounds like progress.
