Re: Minnesota Crunchers

OS logs was showing kernal power issues. Reached down and unplugged my ups, dead. Batteries in the ups are bad. My guess is little brown outs here and the ups couldn't cover the power. Will us wall power for now. Was able to drain boinc on win7 so now on ubuntu. Will see how it goes.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Well that lasted about 5 minutes. Dead. I’ll look at it later when I have some time. For now my gaming hex is the only thing crunching.

That could maybe be an "Aha" moment. Just possible it is a power supply issue, or as I think about it a little more, those "little brownouts" just might have corrupted something on the motherboard. 5 minutes of run time sounds pretty catastrophic.
I like Windows 7 which has run pretty problem free for me, but my Linux machines, most of which I run 24/7 can run for long periods of time with virtually no problems. When I have done this with various versions of Windows over the years, it seems 2 to 3 weeks is about the longest I remember before I had to reboot, restart or otherwise deal with some issues which were mostly pretty minor. I realize my experiences are merely anecdotal in nature, but for me at any rate, Linux appears to be more stable over the long run.
I hope you find the problem.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I just replaces the PSU and changed the memory. Next step is to change the hard drive and disconnect the other drives. Will send super micro a email to see what they say.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Until I get time to get deep into the motherboard, I shut off hyperthreading and turbo boost to see if this will help. 10 threads is better than none. Starting to research older server chips. Ivy bridge chips are pretty reasonable priced from what I see. Will limp this system until I find a replacement.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Knock on wood, made it through the night. Shaved off a little over an hour crunch time shutting off hyperthreading and turbo boost. Hopefully I will have time this weekend to open it up and see whats up.

Joe, my wifi blue signal keeps flickering under linux like someone is downloading from me but no one is. Under windows, it only flickered when activity was going on. Any ideas why?

I am a rank beginner when it comes to wireless troubleshooting. There are two things which come to mind. The first is there is some auto ping feature enabled where Linux is checking in with some location. The second is you have another person or entity piggybacking off of your wifi. You can check your router table and see if there are any unknown users or any unrecognizable MAC addresses listed. Other than that I am at a loss.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Have looked at Ubuntu wifi settings to see if there was something making it do this. The wifi is a linksys USB stick. Will look for a utility for linux to see if I can find anything. Thanks.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Disconnected the multiport fan controller and my graphics card to see if this helps. Have the fans connected to the motherboard. Seems to last 2 days then quit. Still plan on blowing it out and removing everything but the main drive this weekend. Also a clean install of Ubuntu only. Hopefully with minimal power to the motherboard, I can keep it running and activate the rest of the threads.
