Re: Minnesota Crunchers

There is one called platform update for win7 that i think is causing it. Will wait until I get my 20 years done before attempting the updates. Its running to smooth to monkey with it now.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Decided to monkey with it this morning. Bad idea. Did a few more updates. Ran fine so I did another disc image. Then tried a few more updates, 1 at a time. Died. Tried to reinstall my disc image, nope. That won't boot now. Did a web search for fixing the UEFI. That didn't work but did show me how to shut UEFI off (secure boot) in the bios. Runs fine this way. Leaving it alone until I get my 20 years on smash childhood cancer.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Joe, what would you consider the lowest psu I could get away with for my dual X5670 system? Have always used gold psu’s, have a 850 watt (dead) now. Has 6 disks and a cd drive in the case. Thanks

I will check my systems when I get a chance and let you know what I have.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I don't know if you have a desktop or a rack server configuration. If you have a 1U server configuration, I may be able to help you out. All of my rack servers have dual power supplies and I am only using one of them. They are Dells. If you could use one of the spare ones, you would be welcome to one. If You have a desktop configuration, I don't have any of those, but I would recommend at least the gold and maybe the platinum, depending on the cost differential.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Motherboard is a super micro X8DT3 dual socket. X5670 chips at 95 watts. Have it in a large upright case. Could you see what power your PSU's are? Thinking I could get away with a 650 watt but not sure. Probably stick with gold standard. Could do a 750 watt to cover my butt though. Thanks.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Numbers might be a little off today. We had a power outage which lasted about 2.5 hours. I wasn't home at the time so my machines were offline about 4 hours. Thankfully everything came back up normally.
Bearcat: I will check my dual hexcore systems and see if there is anything there which tells me the power supply wattage.
Cheers

The two 24 thread machines I have are Dell R610's. They come equipped with dual 502 watt power supplies. I only use one of the power supplies at any one time and they both seem to run just fine with without having them both connected. I think it saves power too. If the existing one would burn out, then I would have a ready made spare.
It looks like somebody switched over to the small SCC1 units. We had 29000+ units done yesterday. Around 8000 of those were mine, so I know someone else must also be running this project almost exclusively. It sure did put a spike in the results graph.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Thanks. May just go with a 750 watt since I have 5 hard drives connected inside. Used to use it for video editing. Its in a monster chassis that can take I thing 14 drives. Works great heating up the bedroom in the winter. Thanks again.

Those 5 drives will suck some juice. Since I have zero spinning drives, that is not a factor for me. Besides the dual CPU's there are 4 internal fans that always run so I think those items, the fans and the cpus, suck the most juice.
