A little more bad news on the hardware front. The hard drive on the I7 just went belly up. I will get that replaced in a day or two.
----------------------------------------Edit: The news was not as bad as I thought. I talked to a person who knows Linux and I had tried to fsck the disk but had not put the right path into the command so it did not work. Once I used the correct path the system made some corrections and I rebooted and voila, it worked. So the I7 is back in production. It was software corruption and not a hardware failure. I brought a couple of spindles from my 48 in. (120cm) mower to get rebuilt. They are old enough that they don't make most of the parts for them anymore, but the machine shop said they could rebuild them. They also said they would be done last Wednesday, but that was a bit optimistic. I checked on Friday and they said Monday for sure. I wonder what the bill will be. The estimate was $150 to $200. I have looked for an entire replacement deck, but can't touch any that are any good for less than $500. If they are cheaper, I would have to get them rebuilt anyway. Cheers

Sgt Joe,
I recently purchased a new Dell system which allowed me to "retire" 5 of my older systems. I have contacted several 3rd party resellers and they tell me there isn't any demand for these systems anymore. I was going to contact a recycler but if you are interested in having them I would be willing to send one or more to you essentially for the cost of packaging materials and shipping costs (estimating $100 USD each). These are dual socket IBM 2U servers with Intel processors. Brief specs below: IBM 7947-AC1 (2) INTEL X5570 2.93GHZ 16GB (2) 73GB (2) 675W IBM 7947-AC1 (2) INTEL X5570 2.93GHZ 20GB (2) 146GB (2) 675W IBM 7947-AC1 (2) INTEL X5550 2.67GHZ 4GB (2) 146GB (2) 675W IBM 7947-AC1 (2) INTEL E5530 2.4GHZ 8GB (2) 73GB (2) 675W IBM 7947-72U (2) INTEL X5550 2.67GHZ 20GB (1) 73GB (2) 675W |

Hello Joe, hello chaps.
----------------------------------------Not sure should I perform apology about leaving your most joyful group without explanation, or that I have return to spam. Sure, same chap behind nick reflecting latest Northern. Still do some crunching with my original name (Ranarama), but really I cannot be anymore part of any team or some. Some steppenwolf now a days. My migration to USA has reach to level where currently looting mundibonds. Virginia concurred, now my interesting about MN. This northern State is not to top item what becomes credit rating, but there is best distortion from price to yield, that I have been able to found. Reflecting my horizon with tool NYSE:NMS Closed end fund, bonds are sold 12% under NAV. Generally MN cretit rating is AA+ (equal with Finland witch pays -0,15% versus MN >4%). As far as I have understand, State cannot perform default in USA. So N.Y City or Washington District of Columbia can put belly up. But state of NY or State of Washington cannot. So state will become another line on federal budget on worst case scenario anyhow, as did become Freddie Mac and Ginnie Mae. https://youtu.be/kM2mZ6LuT6A [Edit 1 times, last edit by Ranarama at Aug 29, 2019 6:11:28 PM] |

Nice of you to stop in for a chat. I just heard the governor on the radio today and he stated Minnesota had a AAA bond rating. It might depend if you are looking at either Moody's or Fitch's. Even if it is only AA+, that is better than most. Most muni bonds are pretty good, but be careful because there have been some defaults in the past in other states. I do net remember any muni bonds from here defaulting. There is no need to be shy, stop by anytime to chat.

I started back to school again last week. I took a couple of math classes last year, 1 each semester which were geared toward the teaching of math in the elementary and middle schools. This year I am taking a course called statistics for the social sciences. My wife figures it keeps me from being underfoot too much, although I would have suspected that after more than 7 years of my being retired she would be used to me being around. She says I need to keep my mind from being clogged with cobwebs. Time will tell if I am any good at this.
----------------------------------------Now that the public schools have started, I will be back to volunteering and substitute teaching in middle school. Something else to do to keep me out of trouble. Besides which there are a lot of kids who need the help in the math classes. I went to the Minnesota State Fair last week. There was the usual crowd of people and I ate al the things I usually do every year - cheese curds, malt, Sweet Martha's cookies and all the milk you can drink for $2.00. Looked at the heaviest boar again, this year he weighed in 1160 lbs.(about 526 kg.)The most fun is watching all the other people in the crowds. And the weather was perfect 55F(12C) in the morning and 72F(22C) in the afternoon and sunny. Edited: corrected misspellings and missing words Cheers

I’m out for a few days. Doing a full reinstall of the OS and apps. My Samsung 840 pro seemed to be chocking to the point of locking up. Ran Samsung magician to test it out. One test showed random writes was real low. Figured ssd was dying. But after uninstalling everything, ran it again. Showed just fine on that one low test. I have boinc data on a different drive which should be crunching off that hard drive, right? Hope to be back up by Sunday.

Installed Boinc last night before bed. Working good so far. Do have some issues with windows update though. After I reinstall Win7 pro, have about 200 updates to install. I don't do them all at once, in batches of about 30 at a time. The last batch of about 15 nukes the system. One of the updates changes something in the UEFI boot sector. After going through this twice of starting over, I did a disk image of C drive before I try that last batch of updates. Glad I did. Tried again and locked me up. After I re imaged, installed boinc before bed. Won't be updating the rest until I hit my 20 years on smash childhood cancer which is about 150 days of crunching.

I have one system still running Win 7. I have not had any problems so far with the system locking up on any updates so far. May be you could do that last batch of updates one at a time, to see which one is causing the problem.
