Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Sorry to hear about your water issues. Hope you get that sorted out quick. Have had enough of the rain but looks like that will slow down a bit according to the weather guys on tv. Am hoping the tornadoes hold back. Way to many in this country this early. Looks like a new project coming once the beta wu's are done. Later

I have not snared any of the Beta units on this go round. Maybe when some more are released.
My problems with the water are very minor when compared with the problems others are having with massive flooding and tornadoes. It will take a couple of weeks of dry weather to lower the water table before I get my basement dry again.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I was helping one of my offspring move on Wednesday. I was told he would have a 15 foot truck rented at 09:30 and we could start loading. Ha Ha ! The rental place was busy as the dickens and when our turn came, it took 15 minutes to complete the paperwork. The lady went to get the truck and came back 10 minutes later to say the truck was dead. But she lines us up with another dealer, luckily only a few miles distant. She said she would transfer the paperwork. When we get to the new dealer, there is a line. We wait our turn. The lady completes the transfer of paperwork and we go to examine the vehicle. It has a cracked windshield so they decide to get a different one. New paperwork has to be generated. However, now there is a computer glitch which is not allowing the new paperwork to be generated. After several tries, she finally just completes the new paperwork by hand and sends us on our way. By the time we get ready to start loading it is 12:30. My off spring severely underestimates the scope of the loading time. We finally hit the road at 5:30 PM. The move is 3 hours away. The trip is thankfully uneventful. So we have about 45 minutes of daylight to complete the unloading phase. Ha Ha again ! There was little to no plan about placement of the items as they are unloaded. At about 12:30 AM Thursday morning we are finished. We return the truck to the drop off point and start our journey back. There are still a number of carloads of stuff to move, but no big items needing a truck anymore. So the offspring can complete the move to the new location just by car over the next couple of weeks. We get back to the offpring's apartment about 03:30 AM. I pick up my car and come home which takes about 90 minutes. At 05:00 AM I am ready to hit the sack, which I do with as few delays as possible. So, needless to say, I was not too productive today, but I did sleep like a rock. I don't mind helping the kids, but I was not really prepared for the length of this endeavor.
Crunch on.
Cheers

Thanks for the feedback. I hope it was a little entertaining to read, because it was not that much fun to do.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

We had a power outage today. It was off for a little more than hour. There is a cutout fuse on a pole about 1/4 mile north of me and it blew. According to the power company it took out about 69 customers. I don't have any systems on backup power so I was down for a while. But, everything came back up with no problems. Some systems restart automatically and others I have to manually restart.
Hot and very humid today. 88F(32C). Thank goodness it is not as hot as Europe.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

A little glitch in works. We had a power outage on July4 and it apparently corrupted my three machines running on USB drives. I thought I had it fixed yesterday, but only partially so. I decided today to just re-image the drives for a fresh start. So I have about 100 units which ended up with error or detached. But I should be back in regular production now. They have been through power outages before, but it might just have been time or maybe there was a bit of a voltage fluctuation when they restarted. Who knows ? The same USB drives appear to be operating OK after the re-image.
Along with the outage we got 3.7 in.(9.4cm) of rain. I hope it dries out a bit.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I finally did something which I had been contemplating for quite some time. I decided it was time to clean out all the computers I had laying around. And it turned out it was most, but not all of them. Most of them I had gotten for nothing or maybe a few dollars at auctions, garage sales, yard sales or other bargain locations. Many of them I had already cannibalized for parts, memory, power supplies or hard drives. A few of them maybe still worked. I took 15 computers to an outfit in Minneapolis called Free Geek who do rehab, recycling and parts salvage. They also run a thrift store with computers, and assorted parts. They cater with some really old items to collectors. I did have 2 old 486 machines in the bunch so maybe they can sell some parts out of those. Anyway, they are out of my hair and my better half is a bit happier. Now she wants to know when the rest of the old machines will be going.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Whats left?

Some old servers mainly, about 5 or 6. My core2 duo laptop which still runs fine. A 386 which still runs very well. The I7 Lenovo on which I am typing this (my main house machine). An all in one Gateway I use to back up the 386. My 4 core HP AMD Phenom(tm) 9150e Quad-Core which I just recently retired from crunching. My 6600 quad, 2600K machine and a Dell T7400 with twin Xeon 5410's. Plus the 3 servers I have running in the shed. There are also 3 laptops, none of which are currently running because they are just because I haven't gotten around to trying to run them. One of them is an old 286 laptop. There is also a couple of older 386's with no hard drives in them which I may just get working. I have 2 Pentium systems I use to test hard drives. And last but not least a working IBM XT with a 10 meg hard drive. It still worked the last time I fired it up, but that was a couple of years ago. I think that is it.
My wife still thinks I have too many computers around.
Cheers
