Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Not sure whats up with win7 updates but both my win7 pro machines will not update the roll up updates. 2 of them.

Rats ! I had this reply almost done and it disappeared. Anyway, I have a machine which has Win 7 Ultimate and it receives updates every Tuesday without a hitch. I know it is nearing its end of life, but I will keep running it anyway. I also have a machine running Vista which had end of life years ago. It mostly just crunches, so I will keep it running for bit yet. It is a Q6600 which has given me faithful service for a long time. I may phase it out eventually because it is not too efficient, but I will let run a while longer. Towards the end of November it will have crunched for ten years. I will at least let it make that milestone.
Good luck with that machine.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Will check my motherboard logs periodically for errors. If they pop up again, will get a hold of super micro to see what they say on the errors. They are good about helping their customers. Am not to worried about updates on the dually since it only crunches. Q6600 is an old processor. Was a good chip in its days. Easy to over clock.

I am not into overclocking. I have always run it stock. That is probably why it has lasted as long as it has as a cruncher.

Do yourself a huge favor and turn auto updates off. 99+% of them will be of no use to the casual desktop user and cause way more issues than they are ever worth. I too have been using and will continue to use Win7 since it first came out and have never updated anything after SP1 and have had no issues of any kind. JMHO

Thanks. I appreciate your advice. Since it is approaching its end of life anyway, I will strongly consider doing just that. I will say, it has run pretty problem free and I would like it to stay that way.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I pretty much gave up on updates. When I get my 20 years on fight aides II, may switch over to Ubuntu and pull the motherboard to put in a older chassis I have collecting dust. Sell the monster chassis its in now since I don't need a system that holds about 20 hard drives.

I have had good luck using Linux. I don't do much with it but run BOINC, but at least it doesn't bug me with updates and other problems. And it runs dependably for long periods of time without a glitch.
I finally got a replacement for the Dell 8 core on which the power supply went belly up. It is an HP G6 with twin Xeon E5645's, so that is another 24 threads, a gain of 16 threads over the old system. I will have to see how it performs over the next few days.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I just had one of my USB drives bite the dust yesterday with about 30 pages (about 300) Zika units which are all now listed as detached. Bummer. I had 63 cpu years on that one, so I guess it did its duty. It has now been replaced with another $5.00 USB drive. We'll see how it does on a mixture of other units. It is on one of the 24 thread machines and I lost about 24 hours worth of work before I got the replacement up and running.
The new machine I put on about a week or so ago is running nicely. In a little while I will re-retire the core 2 duo, which I put into use when the T7400 died. I will try to replace that - eventually.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Woke up to my dually off. Fired it up. ECC memory error message shows up during bios flash screen. Going to look a bit deeper later today to see if its anything else before ordering memory, provided I can find it. If I find other issues, will junk it. Hope its the memory though.
