Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Looking at PSU's. Always go for gold rated. One in there now is a corsair AX850. Corsair has worked out good over the years. Hope to have one next month and hope this was the issue.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I don't know about you, but I am getting a little tired of winter. I used the warm weather yesterday to shovel off my porch roof and knock off some of the more egregious ice dams. I knew it was going to be nasty today, so I did not want to be doing that in the wind. I see we will have below zero nights right into the first week of March. With the amount of snow on the ground we could use a gradual melt so any flooding is minimal. But we get that fast warmup in later March we could have flooding problems.
Good luck with the power supply.I hope that was the problem.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Tired of winer too. Had so much snow on roof that I had to get up there and shovel it off. Took 3 hours. Then dealt with the large pile on sides of house. Bought a skid steer (79 Gehl 360) to help around the house since I cannot lift much any more. Comes in handy. Blew a hydraulic cylinder and pully a couple days ago. Doesn't like the cold. Still looking at different PSU's hoping to find a gold on clearance.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

My wife said NSP (Xcel Energy) was doing something down the road a piece today. I was kind of wondering if that was the source of the 10 second power outage I had. It knocked all of my big crunchers off the air for a while. They are the ones running out in the shed. I haven't been in the shed for a couple of months so when I had time I had to shovel my way in. Everything is back up and running but those systems do not automatically restart so it was kind of a pain in the neck to go have to restart them manually.Thankfully, this does not occur very often, my power has been mostly very reliable. I could put them all on a UPS, but just don't think it is necessary as the only thing they are running is BOINC.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Well, I had a little surprise today. The three systems I had running out in the shed are going to be off line for a while. I noticed they had not returned any work units since about 05:00 AM Central Standard Time. I did not think much about it at first, but when they had not returned any by 2:00 PM, I needed to check what had happened. When I checked, I found the circuit breaker had tripped. When I went to reset it, I found out why it had tripped. The plug on the heavy duty power strip had corroded and created a short, which fried the plug in box. I think it had been plugged into the same socket for a couple of years. Over time I suppose some moisture had condensed in there and caused the corrosion. So I need to do some re-wiring and get a new 20 amp power strip and a new socket. I had 56 threads (two 24 thread machines and an eight thread machine) running out there. Between them all they drew about 14 amps on a 20 amp circuit. The monitor, KVM switch, ethernet switch and range extender were all plugged into a different circuit. If I get time I should have them back up and running by Wednesday, I hope.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

That bites about blown socket. Hopefully its not to bad to get it going again. Am still looking for PSU. Might have to go cheap but hoping to find a deal on a gold psu. Almost $300 to repair the hydraulic arm seal. Got it back next day but to dam cold out to monkey with it. Have a kerosine 125000 btu heater in garage but to long without circulating fresh air gets a bit dizzy. Leave the garage door open to help. With all these new solar farms going on line, you will see a brief disruption when they put them online. I did security for the one in annandale for a few months. Those farms are cropping up everywhere.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I had some time today so I bought a new socket and did some re-wiring. I have no heat in that shed so wiring in the cold is always an adventure. That wire is awfully stiff and some of the work I needed to do barehanded. But I think it should be OK now. All the machines booted OK and are back in production.
I had -16F(-26C) this morning, but it has warmed up to 8F(-13C) this afternoon. I am really waiting for the temperature to get above 32F(0C) and start to see some sign of Spring.
Cheers

Funny you should mention Nome Alaska. I just checked (March 4, 8:20 PM CST) and it is 32F in Nome versus the 6F it is here. So at least for today you are right, Nome is warmer than Central Minnesota. laughing
