Re: Minnesota Crunchers

mirror ice is kind of slippery when wet.

You have got that right. Coefficient of friction on that kind of surface is close to zero. I have had my share of bad experiences with this devilish phenomenon, but luckily I am built closer to the ground than you and only have had my pride hurt. At least you can sleep now uninterrupted. Hope you heal properly and quickly.
Unusual springtime weather here. All the snow is gone and temperatures are in the 60's F (almost 20 C). I don't ever recall such an early and warm spring. Awfully dry too.
Cheers

shock That sound almost ominous.

Much better here, spring is so 80's or something. Nice sunny days and below zero on night time.
I did perform some asocial act and order seeds from eBay, got myself dragon carrot seeds from China.
Think I will have some friction with customs, if they found those cowboy

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Winter has paid a brief visit with about 2 in(5cm) of snow this morning. The roads were slicker than Brylcreem hair this morning. But by later in the morning it had warmed up and the ice on the roads had melted.
I am busy backing up an old 386 I acquired brand new in the late 1980's I think. I keep this system around because it has some interesting shareware on it and it has both 3.5 and 5.25 in floppy drives. However, the only way I have to back up the files is by using 1.4Mb floppies. I am transferring all the files to a newer machine which has some USB ports so I can eventually transfer all the files to a flash drive. Transferring about 90Mb of data takes a while by this method. I think I may finish it tonight. I even had to use my old copy of PKZIP on some files which were too big for the floppy. On DOS that is all CLI.
Cheers

Yup, Doom will need four floppy.

Edit: OS2 was 48, some (before W95) Office packet 28. Think W3.0 was only ten or something.

I did have to go back and read the documentation to find the switch which allows for the spanning of multiple diskettes. The nice thing about it, is even on the 386 it works fast and gives pretty good compression ratios, >50% on the files I using. With the space available today, most don't even think about compression any more.
I think I still have my box of OS2 someplace. I haven't thought about it for years.
Cheers

Friendly reminder, try avoid Ctrl+Alt+Del
Nope, no Taskmgr or anything, it just boot hold crappier without any warning. I can still remember urge to shoot every PC with OS2.

Positive side is that it boots really fast.

Right there you have one of the reasons (among many) why it died out.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

OS2, when working properly was a great OS. I jumped on it as soon as it came out. To bad it didn't stick around. If they would have put some serious muscle behind the support, would still be here today. Still think Microsoft through a bunch of money to shut it down.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Correct me if I am wrong, but I seem to remember it was supposed to be more crash resistant than Windows. Microsoft I believe used some monopolistic practices with OEM's to prevent getting a machine with OS2 installed. (Pre Chinese wall between OS and application division ???) I seem to recall there was some lack of developers and a lack of drivers for some hardware. Other than still having a copy, my memories of exactly how the product performed are hazy to say the least.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

more crash resistant than Windows <-> lack of drivers for some hardware.

Think this was main reason for it stability. When HW and SW are from same company, result is pretty flat stuff. Very same was with IRIX and AIX.

Any PC that I was able to run with with Solaris, was also pretty eternal.
Last one by the way was ADM K6-2 with VooDoo3. Solaris did not of course understand anything from last one, did run it with eight colors, so stable for sure. Did not overheat my ultra cool graphic-card or anything tongue
