Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I am back to having connectivity problems with my remote Linux systems. They were behaving for a while, but now, once again, every time there is a glitch in connectivity every job that is running gets a computation error. I thought it was a congestion problem, but apparently not so because I have set the preferences for all of the Linux machines to different time segments that do not overlap. I am going to try an updated OS and see if that solves the problem. The one remote Windows system (XP) has not ever had the problem. There is also one system running an old version (Linux Mint 7) which also seems to be immune. If all else fails I can always load that version even though there is no longer any support for it.
Cheers

My understanding is that this is a bug in the Linux implementation of BOINC. It seems to affect some kinds of work units and not others. I know it happens with CEP2 and CFCW. If I remember right, it didn't happen with the VINA sciences -- if I had GFAM or DSFL or SN2S running alongside a CEP2, the CEP2 would be the only one to error out when the Internet connection was down and BOINC tried to contact the server.

Is your system with Mint 7 running the same sciences as the ones with more recent Linux versions?

Kate

Until you mentioned this I had not thought about which sciences were running. The Mint 7 machine is an old DL 360 server with dual 2 core processors, each processor about equivalent to a low end P4. It is running exclusively HCC. The other two servers were running the 3 Vina sciences with which they had only an occasional problem. I have switched them to HFCC( to get to 15 years) and now they they have a multitude of connectivity problems. I have 2 Core 2 Duo systems which are running FAAH and they only have a rare problem. BTW the problem does not exist in a wired configuration, only with the wireless. To me it does not make any sense that the science would have this effect, but you may have hit on the problem area. Thanks

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Have around 5 inches so far by clearwater. Looks like it will stay for awhile too. Temps will get colder later in the week. Stay safe everyone.

We just got rain this time around. Are you getting ice or mainly wet snow?

By St. Cloud it is all snow, with visibility varying from 100 to 200 yards(about 90 to 180 meters). From the radar it looks like the snow will last about 2 more hours or so. It is warm at 28F(-3C) but the really good thing is there is virtually no wind so it is not drifting. Looks like we will get the 6 to 8 inches ( 15 to 20 cm) they predicted.
Cheers
