Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Spoke to soon. Looks like I got a heat issue on the harpertown rig. 3 crashes yesterday with nothing in the logs indicating anything. 1 core temp higher than the rest. Reduced it to 4 cores now and seems stable. Will have to wait until I get better before wrenching around. At least it's still crunching though.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I have been having allot of problems with my old hp desktop machine the motherboard is on its way down. so I decided hopefully in a months time I can buy a new computer from system76 the computer I want is listed below.

Wildebeest Performance
- Operating System Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) 64-bit
- Processor Intel Core i7-870 2.93 GHz L2 8 MB DMI 2.5 GTs - 4 Cores with Hyperthreading
- Memory 8 GB - 4 x 2 GB - DDR3 - 1333 MHz
- Graphics 1 GB nVidia GeForce GT430
- Hard Drive 500 GB SATA II 300 Mbps 32 MB Cache
- Optical Drive CD-RW / DVD-RW
- Second Optical Drive no second optical drive
- Wireless no wireless
- LCD Monitor no monitor
- Speakers no speakers
- Keyboard and Mouse no keyboard and mouse
- Portable Flash Drive no flash drive
- Hardware Warranty 1 Yr. Ltd. Warranty and 1 Yr. Technical Support
- Recycle Your Old Computer no, thank you
$952.00

If you have your own case and PSU you could build your own Sandy Bridge for $200-$300 less. You'll get longer parts warranties on most of the stuff and there are plenty of very knowledgable people here to help with tech support. Just some food for thought.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Over the weekend I got another 8GB of RAM for the backup server/gaming rig. Civ V was thrashing on huge maps with only 4GB. Ran MemTest86 for a complete run and it was stable, so should be good to go! I also swapped my laptop hard drive for a new one, 750GB now instead of 250GB. Gave the 250GB to my girlfriend to replace her 120GB which was totally full.

Interestingly, doing the Windows 7 backup/restore on my new hard disk was much smoother than the Mac OS X Time Machine backup/restore on her's. All because Steve jobs limits what you can do by default, and Bill Gates doesn't! (Specifically, having backup targets on an SMB share).

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Another good reason to go sandy bridge is if you get a mobo that has UEFI (like the Asus), very simply to over clock by adjusting one item in the program that comes with it and the rest adjusts automatically. Even if the cost comes close to what you posted, it still would be worth it. Keep an eye on new egg and micro center for combo deals. Not sure where you live but if your not far from me, I would be glad to assist you. Just finished surgery so no work for at least 3 more months. Am free to assist, or someone else closer could probably help. Let use know, we are here to help.

I bought a laptop from System 76 about a year and a half ago. I am very satisfied with the quality of the machine and the service I got from System 76. If you specifically want to purchase a complete computer with Linux installed, I highly recommend them.

See if you can get 2 x 4GB instead, otherwise you'll have no slots free for future expansion.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I do like everyone's comments, I have built computer's in the past building is the easy part (at least for me) the problems I find is getting the right parts that play well with each other, experientially for Linux, I have checked on new egg and I did find some do it your self ones for cheap, and I have the parts that were not included in the kit, but I just don't feel like doing any building, or looking up compatible parts, that is why I am looking at buying from system 76. everything is all ready to go for Linux, cost more but all ready, I have been having problems with mental health problems, with severe depression, so that is why I just don't feel like doing any building, If any one lives close to Wadena, I would consider their help, but I don't think anyone lives close, plus I have to sell my blazer to get the money to buy anything right now, ps if anyone wants to buy a 93 chevy blazer 4x4 s ten tahoo let me know

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Interesting that System 76 is offering the GT 430 as an option for GPU. That is the card that I have in the AMD system that I built in Jan. I am mostly happy with it but disappointed in one respect. I like that it doesn't draw much power and doesn't require an extra power supply. I like that it's a double precision card and runs Milky Way.

System 76 almost certainly is using the OEM version, rather than the consumer version that I bought, so yours would be a faster card than mine. My only major disappointment with mine is that it's very slow running GPUGRID. I think that's because of GPUGRID's WUs not being well optimized for Fermi cards. Mine is acceptably fast running MilkyWay, PrimeGrid, and Collatz.

I had to think long and hard before I answered this, but here goes. I really want to be supportive of you, so please don't take offense. I have seen some some amazing results for some people when they get a really good therapist who knows what they are doing. I would encourage you to seek one out and do whatever it takes to get yourself to feel better. The computer can wait, take care of yourself. Besides next months model is always smaller, better, faster, cheaper, etc.

Take care

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I would have to agree with Joe, your health is the number on priority. Please seek help so you can get better. WCG, or anything else can wait. Suggest not sell anything to just crunch here. If you can tell us what is going on with your computer, maybe we can help/assist keeping it going for awhile longer. I do get up that way from time to time so after I am able to drive again and doc clears me from my surgery, (should be June provided no issues arise), I can come up an help if you would like. Since you have built pc's before, if you need a part to keep your PC going, I or someone else could donate it, depending on what is needed. I have some spare parts from previous builds laying around. BUT, your health is priority. WCG can wait.
