Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Down here in Apple Valley, we've only got maybe 1-1.5 inches in the past 24 hours.

Consider yourself lucky this time around. It was slicker than goose grease this morning. It did warm during the day and the roads were much nicer when I came home.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Fixed my last dilemma. Broke down and bought a wireless USB stick. Works pretty slick. Tried to use 2 wireless routers, one in bridge mode, but didn't pan out. Should be set now.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

just wanted to stop in and say hi, it has been a while, my crunching has slowed down a bit since my dual core went down for good, it was 7 years old, a good old friend.

my neighbours have really fast Internet, they have their Internet through charter, on speedtest.net my neighbours Internet average was 13mb down and 1.3mb up, I can download a 667mb torrent in about 6 minutes the speed average around 1.35 mb

(their wireless router is un-secured)

my Internet is through arvig, speedtest.net gives me a average of 1.35mb down and .35mb up
when downloading the speed stays at 235kb
I am looking at switching to charter but I have to look into the cost more

Again, looks like we're missing the worst of it hear, it's mostly farther south. Only about 2 more inches.

I like snow a lot, I wish we were getting more! AWD and snow tires make it fun!

I have probably the same thing from Charter. It's advertised at 16mb/2mb I think and I rarely see it slow down. The have a "burst" thing too where you will see over 20mb for short periods. And no bandwidth caps! :D

No bandwidth caps so far. I have heard (unverified) that if Charter believes you are a bandwidth hog you will be throttled back no matter what you are paying. Maybe they had just talked about doing that and never did. Beware if they get monopoly rights in your area. Anyway it is good to hear from you again hunterkasy.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

The new little laptop with the AMD fusion chip arrived yesterday. I haven't had much time to put into it yet but it looks good so far. It came with Windows 7 Home Premium. I'm going to wait until Ubuntu Natty comes out to make it dual boot, as Natty is supposed to have the right drivers for this chip right in the kernel.

I couldn't resist putting BOINC on it even though I know it will be slow. It's running 2 HFCC and one Collatz. I want to see whether it can do GPUgrid, but I haven't had time to figure out what I need to do to make that work (couldn't get any WUs yesterday).

The graphics are very impressive for a netbook-type machine -- much faster than on my my husband's Core i3 laptop. The cutout kids in the HFCC screen saver just dance on the AMD Fusion, whereas they crawl jerkily on hubby's Core i3.

This should be a very nice on-the-road laptop. Battery life is supposed to be 6-9 hours. I'll probably test that out Sat. when my husband and I are driving to a funeral in western IA.

I am very excited at the prospect of the higher performance AMD Fusion chips coming out later this year.

Thank you. Am ready to get this done. The wife will be bringing my iPad so will pop in quick to say hi afterwards.

Congrats on the laptop. You'll have to update us on the performance. I've been following the new PSP, NGP, with it's quad core chip. Will be interesting to see how all these small chips coming out will work out. Seems the tablets are a big target. I'm waiting on HP to release there new WebOs tablet and Pre3. I see apple will put a dual core chip in the next iPhone. Getting amazing the power that goes in our little gadgets.
