Re: Minnesota Crunchers

No bandwidth caps so far. I have heard (unverified) that if Charter believes you are a bandwidth hog you will be throttled back no matter what you are paying. Maybe they had just talked about doing that and never did. Beware if they get monopoly rights in your area.

There is DSL here (FrontierNet) that competes with Charter. Also some "wireless" services as well, though those are a bit slower of course.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Today (10th) I signed up for charter cable and Internet services, I wanted their phone service also but for some odd reason it is not available in my area, (it is just voip) the Internet is 12 down, I never asked about up, don't do allot of uploading and I am sure it will be faster than what I have now. everyone with charter customer service didn't understand what I was talking about when I asked if charter throttles heavy users. I think they were being honest they acted like they barely knew how to turn on a computer, they did search for my answer but could not find any info that would help me.

This is an old link from 2007 but it explains what I recalled. I do not know if it applies to Charter.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

just wanted to stop in and say hi, it has been a while, my crunching has slowed down a bit since my dual core went down for good, it was 7 years old, a good old friend.

my neighbours have really fast Internet, they have their Internet through charter, on speedtest.net my neighbours Internet average was 13mb down and 1.3mb up, I can download a 667mb torrent in about 6 minutes the speed average around 1.35 mb

(their wireless router is un-secured)

my Internet is through arvig, speedtest.net gives me a average of 1.35mb down and .35mb up
when downloading the speed stays at 235kb
I am looking at switching to charter but I have to look into the cost more

I have probably the same thing from Charter. It's advertised at 16mb/2mb I think and I rarely see it slow down. The have a "burst" thing too where you will see over 20mb for short periods. And no bandwidth caps! :D

I have Ultra from Comcast as part of a package. It is advertised as 22 mbps, but speedtest says I am getting 49.49 MBPS down and 6.05 up.

Not many sites can send data to me at that speed.

Wow, that is some speed, faster than 96% of the U.S. It seems they are doing a good job for you. Could you be chaacterized as a satisfied customer ?

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Finally got my one cruncher fixed that I lost to the power outag a couple of weeks ago. I tried several things and it would never even boot to the BIOS page. Finally I disconnected everything and tried it. Lo and behold it came to the BIOS. It turns out the hard drive had crashed, frozen or whatever, so once I replaced that , I rebooted and loaded Linux Mint again and we were off and running. (Thanks brink for the parts smile )

Cheers

I am pretty satisfied. Have only had one outage in a year, and it was pretty short. But this really is over kill, because I do not find many sites that can feed me data that fast, and although I have 20 computers in my house connected to WCG, the only other Internet User is my daughter. So I really do not need this speed.

I have this speed as part of a legacy package from Comcast triple play, with top cable package and IP phone. I think now they package it with the 16mb, not the 22mb.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Charter, Comcast, and other cable providers now have a "burst" features which gives you totally unlimited speeds for the first 10-30 seconds of any download, after which they cap you at your advertised rate (10mb or whatever). You need a LONG speedtest to measure your true rate, so it isn't thrown off by the short burst at the start of the test.

I've never noticed and traffic shaping on Charter. I usually get "stuff" from usenet, and that always downloads at the advertised rate. Sometimes I do bittorrent too though and if there are enough seeders, even that will max my connection.

I also don't think they have any monthly data limits, I'm sure I have hit 300-400GB in some months and I've not heard a peep from them about that.
