Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Just outside of Clearwater we got around 10 inches. Plowed out a few driveways besides mine. Sure piled up quick. I think the big rat (punksitauni Phil)(can't spell it) was wrong.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Drat ! That power outage fried one of my 3.4ghz P4's. I thought it was just the video, but I have tried 2 separate video cards and it does not even boot to the bios. With any luck the HD is still good, so I may be able to resurrect it in another machine.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

The GPU crunching bug bit me today. My current ATI card takes a little over 2 hours to crunch 1 unit. Should change when I receive my ATI 6950. Just pulled the trigger. Nice thing about this card is I can flash the 6970 firmware pretty easy. Thought about nvidia but been a ATI fan for a long time.

Congrats on the new card. I'll be interested to hear how it does.

I'll probably be asking your advice on crunching with ATI next month. My husband's netbook bit the dust, and we ordered an HP Pavilion dm1z to replace it. The dm1z has the new AMD Fusion Zacate chip -- a dual-core CPU and an 80-core GPU on one die -- all for 18 W TDP. It won't be fast, but it's supposed to be a surprisingly capable little machine. My husband and I will share it, as I need an AMD Fusion testbed for work. The Zacate chip can take the latest Catalyst driver, so I think it should be able to do GPU crunching -- we'll see!

I keep reading that ATI cards actually are better at crunching than Nvidia cards. Maybe fewer BOINC projects have ATI applications because OpenCL code is harder to write than CUDA.

The new machine isn't scheduled to arrive until about Mar. 25 -- long wait but maybe good timing as the 25th is my husband's birthday!

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Bearcat, I just wanted to add that my good wishes are coming to you from Iowa for your surgery and a quick and complete recovery. I looked up Minnesota Spine on the web, and you certainly seem to have found the best experts to go to.

Is there any way that you'll be able to use a notebook computer while in the hospital? I'm remembering when I was in the hospital a couple years ago how much difference it made to be able to use the Internet, keep in touch with friends by email, etc.
