Just got done this weekend with the 50 hour trivia contest hosted by St. Cloud State. As usual, the team I was on finished in the 50's out of 71 teams. Just like here, some teams have many members and some only a few. We had only a few, so we think we did respectably. For several of the hours we were down to one player - me - so the othe members could get some sleep. It is always fun, but not as much fun as it was in the early years -pre internet time. Now it is mostly how well you can use the internet searches, although they are getting better at internet proofing the questions. This year they had a speed round of audio questions where they had separated the musical tracks from some music and just played one or two of the tracks, guitar or horn part. I could not recognize any of the songs. You needed to give both song title and artist. One of them was a small clip from "Hey Jude" by the Beatles. I could not even do that one ! Maybe from time to time I will throw out some the questions they asked. Cheers Sounds fun -- but exhausting for a small team! Maybe next year your team can recruit Watson... ![]() Watson would do wonderfully. However there is the minor problem of where would I put it and how would I afford the power bill ! ![]() Ten racks with 10 servers each; 100 servers. I wonder how much heat that thing puts out. Cheers

Looks like march 11th is the day. Will fuse 3 discs. Been a long time since I laid in a hospital bed. Not looking forward to the rehab. Supposed to be worst than my rotator cuff I had done twice. It's going to be a long 6 months. Have to relocate my crunchers so I have access to them standing up. I have one running on it's own but the rest I manually update each day. The other half doesn't know computers that much so not sure if I can get her up to speed to help. Got a few weeks to figure this out.

Space is a little limited. Plus I don't trust leaving a windows machine connected to the net. But it's dual boot so probably switch back to ubuntu if I let it go on it's own. Already have an idea where 2 will go unattended. Still have to be high enough to have access since I won't be able to bend or squat for about 3 months. Once the brace comes off then should be ok.

Just an FYI, going to pull one of my rigs off of WCG and crunch climate prediction. Been away for awhile over there and been wanting to go back. Not sure which one yet. Sorry folks!

Plus I don't trust leaving a windows machine connected to the net. Wow, are you still running Windows 95 or something? And no router/firewall? ![]()

Plus I don't trust leaving a windows machine connected to the net. Wow, are you still running Windows 95 or something? And no router/firewall? ![]() Running win7 64. Am behind routers too. All windows OS's have more security holes than a block of swiss cheese. That's one of the reasons I left windows all together in 04. Went over to the Mac until late last year when I decided to build me a computer to replace my Mac pro. Got tired of paying apple's high prices that I can build for half the cost. So both of my 8 core harpertowns run ubuntu and my westmere system runs dual boot ubuntu/win7. Need windows for video editing. Win7 isn't that bad though. Still learning it. Definitely nothing like all lower versions that I have used and configured. Skipped vista (glad I did) but still had to fix everyones crap on that. Enough of the rant. Just don't trust windows.

If you're behind a router and are using the Win7 firewall all I would suggest is to install Microsoft Security Essentials for an extra layer of security. It uses very little resources and can be set to scan and update automatically. It's worked very well for me. I've had my 2 Windows machines running like that since the beta and it's been rock solid and no invasions. As long as you don't use IE and keep it updated you should have zero issues. JMHO.
