Hi Dagorath
----------------------------------------Just to clarify this line "BOINC will allow you to crunch for several projects whereas UD allows only 1 project." UD is dedicated just to the World Community Grid Project(s) such as HPF 1 and 2 and FAAH whereas BOINC will let you run other distributed Grid Projects as well as those 3 Projects supported by the World Community Grid such as SETI@Home and climateprediction.net Sorry Dagorath I've got my pedantic head on today Feel free to give me a kick Dave p.s. just to be even more pedantic UD is also used over a grid.org but if you were over at grid.org you wouldn't be able to mention the wcg on the forum ![]() ![]() |

Thanks for catching that and clarifying it, Dave. I don't think it was pedantic of you at all. I used the word "project" in an ambiguous context and it screamed for clarification. I should be kicked, not you.

Morning Dagorath
----------------------------------------Hey IBM liked your video idea so much they've released their own on the frontpage under "who we are" https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/newsletter/video/viewVideo.do I'm going to find out if I might add it to the podcast feed. I'll keep badgering for the http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates/homepage style logo exchange. It would be another stat for us stat freaks to get behind and it would do what a logo is designed to do which is raise visibility Great work Dagorath Dave ![]() |

I recall seeing that video on TV, I think, a few years ago. I see it's dated 2004. No matter, it's still excellent footage. Too bad they didn't put the URL on the screen or give better hints on how to sign up. Still, I think it would be great for the podcast feed.

Some of the podcast search engines don't allow you to submit a podcast feed until there is more than one episode

... you can submit to more search engines. OK, if you can't get permission to use the IBM video then I'll shoot another episode for you, something a little more upbeat, more than just a talking head like the first episode.

Re: Dagorath
Post on: Jun 26, 2006 quote BOINC has more bells and whistles which are nice if you want them. UD is more "set it and forget it". unquote One thing, as a newbie, that I really like in BOINC, that is not in UD, is I can see "messages" that really let me know what my system is doing (upload, download, retries, etc.). A couple of years ago I ran SETI but shut it down just because of no realistic feedback. I couldn't tell if I had done/accomplished anything. Couldn't even tell if it was running. So I just shut it down. From my perspective, with negative feedback . . . get . . . negative processing. |

Yes, BOINC's messages are informative and very helpful when things go wrong. Another advantage when running BOINC, in case you don't know, is that you can keep tabs on BOINC results after the results are uploaded and reported to WCG. Go to the Results Status page on the website to see that information. Such information is not available for WUs crunched with UD.
You can pretty much forget BOINC too if you want to, after you get it configured. I prefer BOINC over UD. Maybe it's the best choice for putting on a disk to "pass around the block". |

Someone has been listening:
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1983345,00.asp Just came across this article. This kind of publicity, aimed at a technology centric readership, can be very helpful in spreading the word among a very large potential userbase. |

A month later....
----------------------------------------A big WCG welcome to the 8421 new crunchers who have joined us this month That's 280.7 per day (It must be painful being the .7 though )We need more PR (I confess I've only managed to convince just one person this month) The 200K is not far way Come on England (Sorry force of habit )Come on WCG I have some feedback on getting the IBM video onto the podcast - they are seeking permission as I type. I have a link also to the original here http://www.ibm.com/ibm/ibmgives/news/wcg.shtml My email address is temporarily unavailable. I got a free domain name 100Mb of free webspace and 15 free pop emails with my broadband package 2 years ago. Now although I am still subscribing to my broadband service my supplier (who shall remain nameless for now) has not renewed by domain name !!! and let my free domain name lapse without informing me. They are expecting me to pay for the renewal on a free domain name. I said that's free spelt F R E E he said he knew how to spell free ( )As it's Saturday they can't get it working until Nominet start work on Monday. I could get a new domain name working sooner even with the vagaries of DNS than getting my existing email address working again. I apologise if anyone has sent any communications recently roll on Monday AARRGGHH Dave ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by David Autumns at Jul 1, 2006 1:42:22 PM] |
