Re: The recruitment thread!

Advertise on ABC, CBS, NBC, or some other large network during target audience periods (aka, around the 7pm news). We also want to get people that know how to use the internet, so advertising to people that are 70+ isn't going to help. I'm guessing teens and the working class should be our target.

This is really really expensive to do tho, so is there a budget for it? If not, can we fundraise for this or get support from the WHO or some other agency?

I think this is the best way to attract the most users in the least amount of time. But, another idea I had was to get Google to link it, at least for a day, on its homepage. Just a thought.

But regardless of the method we use, the way that people will take the time to download and run this thing is if they realize the impact this project could have on humanity. It needs to be "real" for them, not just some concept or thought. Advertising on ABC for example would show that we're serious and could have a drastic impact on shortening our time to a cure.

Re: The recruitment thread!

I feel that would be a waste of money. We can get far better and cheaper coverage by getting WCG actually on the news.

Fundraising is a complicated issue. At the moment, I don't think WCG are set up to receive donations. WCG is still an IBM project, not a charity - and as such, all their budget comes from IBM. Much as some of us would love to donate, I think it would be a whole legal landmine for them.

There's nothing stopping us from setting up a small fund of some kind to finance our own promotion, if we have a good enough strategy in mind. However, I don't think prime time TV adverts are quite the way for us to go. Let IBM do that kind of thing out of their own advertising budget.

Now getting Google on board sounds like a brilliant idea.

Re: The recruitment thread!

hey georgesisak, this is good publicity, but it only speaks to the subset of people that read extremetech. we need something to spread to people far outside this realm.

Re: The recruitment thread!

Upon joining this grid late last year I began campagning in my local area for redundant machines to place on this grid. My local paper came out to my home and then posted the a story about what I was doing here at the WCG. This was how the article started," Please consider spareing your unwanted computers the indignity of going to the dump! I collect broken computers, scavenge them for usefull parts and assemble working nodes to be placed on the World Community Grid fighting aids."

Since I then, I have placed a reminder letter in my local and have been interviewed by a local radio station, all with positive results. Orakk has grown at a rate of 1ghz a month during this campagn and more people in my region are becoming aware the WCG. I put up a web page to explain and thank those whom have supported my quest recently and can be found here, http://orakk.bigpondhosting.com/ Something better will replace it when I learn more on how to build a web site and add a forum.

Not a method for recruiting large groups of people I know but I am finding those who are helping me to be stayers from all walks of life and these are good people to have onside. Cheers all.

Re: The recruitment thread!

Great Work Orakk

Environmentally friendly too. I'm always amazed how many PC Monitors are down at my local recycling centre. I'm sure plenty of them must still be working replaced by their leaner (and greener) LCD friends

I remember Orakk as a perspex box full of flashing lights on Blake7 way back around the time of the 6502. I think my physics teacher built a computer with breadboards in a perspex box from a kit even before the arrival of the Sinclair ZX81. I think he called that Orakk. Reminiscing again blushing

Great idea though you should speak to MLCBA his success is built up in a similar way

Re: The recruitment thread!

here's an idea and it will be bring more visitors to the www.worldcommunitygrid.org

whole hours of your life will disappear as a consequence though you have been warned.

Remember the first time you connected your modem up and started surfing the internet how great it was all that info and groovy websites at your finger tips.

Re live that experience by signing up to the Stumble Upon Toolbar for Firefox. After all you don't use IE4,5,6,7 any more do you wink

You can recommend sites to "Stumble" and you can register the kind of site you would like to see. Then you press the Stumble button and a random site that has been recommended by other Stumblers gets presented to you

The newness of the Internet experience is returned

It's probably full of Adware and it does monitor where you have stumbled but on the plus side it would bring the general publics attention to the WCG when they might not be looking for it

Have a go at http://www.stumbleupon.com/

Enjoy it's V Addictive you have been warned

Dave

Re: The recruitment thread!

Thanks for all the ideas. In fact, we have a summer intern who is going to work on ideas for growing membershp and devices. I'll make sure she reviews all the ideas in this thread, so keep them coming.

Also, I wanted to remind you we have a partnership program for organizations who run WCG within their organizations. We currently have 172 partners-- http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewOurPartners.do

There is a link off of that page for a form that can be filled out to become a partner.

Thanks,
Blaine.

Re: The recruitment thread!

How about preparing a story and send it to some national papers that have a science / health / technology section. Volkskrant in Holland run a katern on saturday i.e. Give the story the full KISS treatment and dont use mechanical language converters from Google e.g. else the message will get lost in translation. In Germany they have a polular science program on ZDF i think..... advertising for free and very targetted at same time.
