A couple more questions to clarify exactly what we want on this CD:
We need to wait for the next stable BOINC release Why? Surely the prog on the CD needs only to make an online connection to download whatever the latest version is. Its riskier putting out a set version if its later found to be flawed (firsthand experience here in the days when I had to re-copy 5.25" floppies by hand.) and co-brand it. We need to wait for IBM to ... work out a policy for the use of their official WCG logo. Essentialwe need to design the CD contents so it will work on Windows, Linux and Mac machines Esential.Add a couple of video clips a) celebrity sponsor b) 3-d rotations or docking Add some fun applications 1) A 3d-molecule visualiser (Hi Roger! you are not forgotten) with some data 2) Links to sites about AIDS research .. expand this theme ie: make it an attractive bundle. Anyone out there a "media designer"? How do we shout lounder from this forum that we've got a plan here folks? Otherwise we're just talking to oursleves. I am going to see if my (UK) IBM contact can reach whatever permission/buy in. |

I'm listening Snowlizard
---------------------------------------- I've been banging on the IBM door for more press since the end of Month 1 when we had completed 1000 years of crunching. Then when we had done 5000 years in 100 days we've speeded up a tad since then . Some days I have thought this endevour might be a secret. There are T Shirts you know if you know where to look on the IBM website but you can only purchase from the states. I've got one but I'm too lardy on account of being a "computer type" to wear it anymore.I put forward the idea, along the idea of, http://www.spreadfirefox.com/ so that that official wcg logo could be got out there. It would also give us another stat to be good at as various teams/members bid to get the most click throughs. All to no avail but it's great to see new blood renewed enthusiasm for this project from a beaten up old timer like myself. The message is getting through I think we might beat our runtime record again tonight which is the key stat for member participation. I have have mailed Cancer Research UK and on World Aids day I mailed them to get more coverage - zip Lawrence Hardin has a great outlook on this project he says they will come running once the results of the HPF project get published. Then the New Scientist etc will get wind and start publishing - I've email New Scientist along the way too. I have to say IBM are not the best folks to promote our cause and at the end of the day it's just not sexy enough. Maybe a bit of Viral Advertising might do the trick. The odd WCG sticker or 2 on a lampost or flyposting. If we posted just one sticker each there would be 182,761 little adverts for the grid around the globe. I'm fairly cruel to the IBM Crew, bbover3, knreed, Alther, Nelsoc et al but in the near term there will be a lot more to shout about even than what we have today - They are working hard delivering a great grid solution which gets better by the week. This is where this grid excels. We could use some great Ethical Policies from some major corporates to get this thing really rolling unfortunately in my experience the corporate PC is lovingly protected by a inpenetrable fortress of "security experts" Could I just say again to anyone who may be reading I have been running the UD and the BOINC agents on my PC's for a combined run time of over 10 years - 10 years of being connected to the terrible Internet and these programs have caused me no as in zero zip nothing diddly squat zilch problems at all - full stop. I'll say that again that's no problems on the security front whatsoever. Keep those idea's coming better still just get your buddy on board crunching and before too long the world will know. I have to be out of the house for 5:30am tomorrow I'd better shut up. Night all from the UK Dave ![]() |

Its riskier putting out a set version if its later found to be flawed I agree. The installer on the CD should definitely check for updates to the agents. In fact, BOINC and UD should both have an auto-update feature or at the very least the ability to alert the user that an update is available. Eventually there will be some functionality required/desired in the system that will break all previous versions. If the agents don't auto-update when that happens then the agents will simply stop working. At that time you can expect thousands of less dedicated or less experienced crunchers to just opt out rather than try to determine what's wrong and fix it. People will go to some lengths to fix problems with software they need to use but they may not feel that way about software they don't really need. -- |

Just wondering if I could reach pupils by their teachers (biology, chemistry etc.). Young folks often have great computers and are idealistic in some way.
I think first I have to translate some information into German for that purpose (unless someone can give me a hint about some existing material?) Schmidt |
