I can think of 2 ways Universal Studios could help
----------------------------------------1) They must have a bazillion computers. If they would get even 25% of those crunching it would be a big help 2) They could make a short subject on WCG and put it in front of one of their movies. Imagine that... a captive audience of millions settled into their seats, eyes glued to the screen, waiting to be programmed, in theatres around the world, rented DVDs, in every language... and who pops up on their screen?... Dagorath with a word on WCG ![]() OK, it would work better if Angelina Jolie popped up and spoke for WCG instead of me but... get this... the UD installer is also on the DVD!!! And when they leave the theater there are displays with free UD installer CDs in the lobby! Genius or what? [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 23, 2006 11:35:25 PM] |

I'd like to make a couple of install CD's to send around the block. What needs to be on the CD's and How To Do ?
I'm running M$ XP and prefer to make one using this OS. Thank you |

An install CD doesn't really have to be an autorun CD so all you have to do is download the installer program and copy it to a CD. A text file with some helpful links to advice for newbies would also be good.
There are 2 options for crunching for WCG: BOINC agent and UD agent. I would put both agents on the CD plus a file called READ_ME_1ST.TXT to help people decide which agent they want to use. The UD installer can be downloaded from the WCG website home page. The BOINC installer can be downloaded here. |

Autorun's easy enough. It's just a single ini file called autorun.inf.
The format is simple, and well documented. |

So simple it can almost be deduced by looking at a few autorun.inf on a few autorun CDs. I haven't looked at the docs but was thinking it wouldn't be so simple if a choice had to be made between invoking the BOINC installer versus the UD installer. Sure, I could whip up an exe and make it all point 'n click but ... does the demand justify the effort?
Two CDs, one with BOINC the other with UD, would be easier to make. But one CD with a readme to help the user decide which one he wants to install and then he just clicks the appropriate installer icon works for me. Maybe there is a demand? Maybe it doesn't require a 3rd exe? |

I'd include a few web pages, and launch the main page using autorun.

I'm running BOINC with Linux CENTOS 4.3 on this machine and UD on the M$ XP machine. The electric folks switch the electrical grid about two times a day causing gliches. The UD starts up on it's own unattented which is great. The BOINC w/Linux requires a manual restart every time. Any primary reason/s one has to make a choise between UD vs BOINC ?? |

On Linux, BOINC can be setup as a cron job so it will start automatically during boot. On Windows XP, BOINC can be installed as a service which starts at boot time. Or you can put a shortcut in the Startup folder.
----------------------------------------I'm not sure what you mean by "primary reasons" but I'll try. On a single core CPU there isn't a huge advantage to one over the other. There are pros and cons to both. However, UD recognises only one core/processor so for a dual-core machine you might prefer BOINC. BOINC will alow you to crunch for several projects whereas UD allows only 1 project. BOINC has more bells and whistles which are nice if you want them. UD is more "set it and forget it". BOINC can be managed across a network easily. UD cannot. Did I miss anything, anybody? Lots of people start with UD and never want or need more. The nice thing is that if you want to migrate to BOINC it's very easy to do. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 26, 2006 1:57:45 PM] |
