Re: ATTENTION: HomeBrewers team members

It's time for another update, since the HomeBrewers have just met another of our goals -- making it into the top 400 before the end of March -- and we did it with five days to spare.

Woo Hoo! Way to go Team!

Brewing question: Does anyone know how Ace flavors their pear cider? I've looked at the bottle, and I don't see "artificial flavoring" listed anywhere, but my own pear cider had almost no pear flavor. I've decided that part it was the sterilization process for the fruit, which cooked it a bit. However, it seems like that wouldn't account for all the difference. Does anyone else have experience making a cider with a delicate flavored fruit?

thanks

Sorry, Fred. I don't have any experience with ciders at all. Have made a couple of wines, and one melomel, but never a cider; technically, I think it's called a 'perry', isn't it? Anyway, there are plenty of links via google, and perhaps this one will be of some help: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/scrumpy/cider/perry.htm

Cheers.

Re: ATTENTION: HomeBrewers team members

*prods the numbers*

I didn't think you'd ever make it to the top 100, but you've grown quite a bit of late. Keep it up, and you should arrive eventually. You won't get much further than that, though.
Are you referring to the HomeBrewers in the top 100? ... and that we won't get much further than that?? biggrin

Here ya go... we'll definitely crack the top 1 or 2 with this baby...

Re: ATTENTION: HomeBrewers team members

Despite being a Cray.... probably not so fast by todays standards, and almost certainly requires some very specialised skills to get it running.

Perhaps something more along the lines of this would be the go:

http://www.tyan.com/products/html/tx46b4881_spec.html

In a nutshell....
Up to 4 AMD Opteron processors
A couple of RAM slots for each processor

With opterons available in Dual core now, and probably Quad core in the near future (if not already) - we are looking at the equivalent of 8-16 processors in the one box.

Either that, or we get another 8-16 members who can run one PC each.... which is probably a more likely scenario.

Re: ATTENTION: HomeBrewers team members

Hope so.

And if anyone wants to give me unsolicited advice... please do!

I was kind of hoping to have something to offer the Mac fanboys by now. Oh well, at least I have something for those people stuck at a desk without Admin rights, now. And there's a question mark there, still: it should work with a roaming profile. Any students out there who can test this, I wonder?

Hi Rob,

You're right about getting more members - it's the basis of the Grid's power. Just like a colony of ants: each ant may not be very big or powerful, but together they can bring down the biggest beasts.

It's the same thing with computing power - it's cheaper to put together 8 single processor PCs than a single 8 way box. I do wish BOINC had a 64 bit client, though, we're wasting half the new processors' computation power using 32 bit instructions.

So, how to go out and recruit....? I have talked to about a dozen computer types about joining, and so far none have. I guess we need something with greater audience potential. How about an ad in Zymurgy magazine, or on the web site?
