Cor, you've been busy typing away Bill! Fantastic; thanks. First up the stat image is generated by the same place as your old one, from braindev.de. Dont worry about the set up, if your team needs more let me know! ![]() Ady may be able to confirm this, but going by your pc specs i think you should run BOINC on your pc and the UD agent on your sons. As BOINC seems to prefer the faster CPU's. Well, there is a reason I prefer BOINC on my son's PC; my wife and daughter also use it, as do I as a backup. Consequently, we all have our own 'User' profiles, so that whenever the computer is started, it stops at the login screen, and nothing runs until one of us logs on. A few times I've gone in after my son had apparently reset the computer, and found that it was just sitting there running without doing any crunching; that was with UD loaded. However, when I installed BOINC, it specifically allowed me to set it up to run without anyone needing to log on, which cured that problem.![]() As for my PC, I'll eventually try to switch to BOINC, but it's going to be a pain. BOINC won't install on my PC because of a .dll file that it thinks is malware; the file is 'safe' and is needed for my laser mouse. I'll need to uninstall the mouse, switch to another mouse (which will require me to do some gymnastics because of the way my computer is installed in a compartment in my desk which makes access to the back difficult), ... then install BOINC, and then try to reinstall my laser mouse. And if my laser mouse won't install, I'll have to reverse the process. The thoughts of it are enough to convince me to forgo any extra points from BOINC so long as my PC is doing maximum crunching. Unfortunatly i cant help you get that image in your sig, All i can suggest is that you shorten the text of your team link.... Well, as I've indicated in my edited post, if I can combine three graphics into one, it will load quicker, be easier for other HomeBrewers to use, and will give me plenty of room in my sig file. I've tried combining the parts into one graphic, like this: ![]() ... but every time I past the picture of the hops, the colors change, and I want them to remain green. Same with the quote from Ben Franklin -- my yellow stands out better. I'm using the 'paint' program that comes with Windows, so I guess it has some limitations. Any suggestions? Your stat banner would then go immediately below it and look like one big banner. ![]() |

Thanks, CKizer. I finally figured it out myself and came up with almost the same thing, but still couldn't get the colors of the text correct. It was saved as a .jpg file and looks like this: I don't know why .jpg versus .png would make a difference, but I like the color of lettering on yours better and will use that. I have had to adjust the size slightly to size it to my stats banner. So what is a .png file? Anyway, I think that's a pretty cool set up now. Thanks again. png is a Portable Network Graphic file format.
http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/ Glad it works, I would have played with the text color, but my tools here at work are too limited for that. Enjoy, CKizer |

Enjoy, CKizer As you can probably tell, I have a pretty limited knowledge of computer file types, programming, and that sort of thing. The first I noticed the .png extension was on the dynamic banners which change with the stats, so I assumed it was something pretty complicated -- sort of maybe like a java applet or something else that is completely foreign to me. As for the color of text, I actually like the color that you put in yours, which is why I adopted it instead of the .gif that I finally came up with. I think the color makes Ben Frankin's quote stand out a bit -- which is what I like -- and it also seems to complement the colors in the pic of the hops cone. Now I just need to dress it up with a nice assortment of stars of various colors. I suppose HomeBrewers will get a new color in place of the one green and four gold stars. I'm guessing it will be red. Cool. Thanks again. Bill Velek |

Thanks, Ady. I just set mine at 20GB since I have plenty of HD space. Here are a few follow up questions; that page also contains the following advanced options, with my current settings (comments and any questions are shown in angle brackets): Ok Bill - here we go (my answers in bold): Processor Usage: Project Weight: 100 <Does that means to use 100% of whatever CPU cyles are available??>Not exactly, it means give 100% boinc use to WCG as opposed to other boinc projects you may be running. Do work while computer is in use? Yes <default>Fine Do work while computer is running on batteries? No <default>Fine Do work only after computer is idle for: 3.0 minutes <Is this similar to screen saver mode, and should it be set to zero if I want it to always use my excess CPU cycles? I don't know if the answer above (... while computer is in use?) overrides this.>Set to Zero Switch between applications every: 60 minutes <I assume that means if I add other applications in addition to WCG, which I probably won't do.>Correct - leave it On multiprocessors, at most use: 4 processors <default and probably N/A for me with my system>Correct - leave it Disk and Memory Usage Write to disk at most every: 60 seconds <default -- I'll leave that alone>No problem Leave applications in memory while preempted? No <The default is no, but it seems to me that these devices (both UD and BOINC) should be preempted every time I move my mouse or hit a key, right? Doesn't that create an awful lot of unnecessary writing and reading from disk? Does it hurt to set it to 'Yes' with only 128meg of RAM? (my son's comp; I'm not running BOINC on mine) ... and what about if I increase that RAM to 512?>Set to YES, there is a bug in boinc that can cause errors when pausing/stopping/re-booting and you may loose work. Leave at least: 5 Gigabytes of disk space free <changed from .1gdefault>Doesn't really matter if you left it at default Use no more than: 75% of total disk space <default>Fine Use no more than: 75% of total virtual memory <default>Fine Network Usage -- <Are any of these setting necessary, since I'm connected constantly via DSL? I also assume that the max up/download rates being set to zero don't matter.>Correct in your case - leave as default, except for the Connect to network, see below Confirm before connecting to Internet? No <default> Disconnect when done? No <default> Connect to network about every .1 days <default>Change to 0.005 days - will increase communication to server for uploading/downloading results Maximum upload rate: 0.0 Kbytes/sec <default>Fine Maximum download rate: 0.0 Kbytes/sec <default>Fine I think thats it, Ady ![]() |

Thanks, Ady. I know you spent a lot of time with that. I've set it as you've suggested.
On another point, I've noticed that it's been over an hour since the UTC daily update of stats, and my stat banner in my sig file hasn't updated yet. I hope I didn't mess anything up when I was playing around with my sig file; I'll give it a few hours first in case it's just slow for some reason. Cheers. Bill Velek |

lol - you are caught between multiple levels of updates Bill. The WCG does it's update, then all the other stats sites do their updates from the data they get from the WCG and other DC projects.
----------------------------------------What's weird is to see an update on the stats box that happens between the posting of Boinc and UD data. You don't see your points for one platform for a while. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 8, 2006 3:13:29 AM] |

... snip ... What's weird is to see an update on the stats box that happens between the posting of Boinc and UD data. ... snip ... I presume that the stat generator and my banner include points given by WCG, regardless of whether the agent used in BOINC or UD, correct? And on another subject, so that I don't need to keep making separate posts, I've reviewed HomeBrewers progress, and I think we are slighly ahead of schedule and we should definitely attain our goal of making it into the top 500 by March 15th if we don't lose any members/devices and we all crunch at about the same rates that we have for the past two weeks. I estimate that we will probably hit somewhere around 490 to 495 by the end of March 15th. Our next goal is very short term -- making it into the to 5% in points by our 4 month anniversary -- although it might be possible that we'll make both goals simultaneously if we continue to average as many points as we made today. I'd still really like to make it to 50+ current members by the end of the month, but recruitment has taken a real nose dive. I think we just milked the cow dry. Bill Velek |
