Well, that's certainly fantastic news - a new project coming 'down the line', hopefully very soon.
----------------------------------------This should help change the minds of those who have thought that WCG was in its "death throes" and bring new crunchers to the grid. Well done to everyone who has been involved in working to bring this new project about and here's hoping that there'll be very few 'teathing problems' in launching it. Good to hear. It also appears that SCC and HSTB have finished their work at WCG.

Good to hear. It also appears that SCC and HSTB have finished their work at WCG. Apparently so, but they have not updated the Overview page as they are still listed as intermittent. Cheers Edit :spelling

I wonder if we will actually see stuff pass through the old WCG Beta test system or whether they'll just go for a full launch? If the software is [more or less] the same as they use for MCM, the latter is a possibility, though probably "not a good idea" as there will be some problems at first.
----------------------------------------I wonder if the large [master] data file will be made sticky for this project? If not, I foresee the same download issues that MCM1 has when users all run out of work! On a separate note, it would be really nice if they could build a non-Android version of the new project application for ARM systems (and, if so, preferably not just for Apple hardware...) as there are a lot of ARM-based SBCs out there that could make a fair attempt at these new tasks[*1]. I realize that the choice of platforms for ARM can give problems both when building the software and when configuring the BOINC server to ensure the right binaries go to different types of host. Einstein@home seems to manage somehow (albeit that I think [some of] their ARM applications are user-built, and they spent a long time in Beta test!), so it is possible! Cheers - Al. [Edited to rephrase the "sticky file" comment] *1 -- The standard "So run Android on your SBC!" answer isn't acceptable to users who are using their systems for other purposes as well as running BOINC stuff :-) [Edit 1 times, last edit by alanb1951 at Nov 22, 2024 3:01:45 AM] |

This should help change the minds of those who have thought that WCG was in its "death throes" and bring new crunchers to the grid. . I was one of those. We've not had a new project since CV19 in 2020 and no disrespect to the current custodians of WCG, I felt that they'd bitten off more than they could chew and it was slowly dying. I'm happy to be proved wrong... |

Whether you're wrong or not depends a lot on how the currently running project (MCM) is impacted by the introduction. Recent ARP shenanigans make me a bit wary.

The computational steps of the new project should be similar/same as MCM1 since the work is coming from the same lab. This points to a smooth(er) start, which is great. Not sure of the work unit sizes, but I would think it would be VERY comparable to MCM1.

Yup - I was rather assuming that (given the project name) this would be using the existing MCM code base or a close variant, in which case the only large file is the master data file! Run times will depend on the size and nature of that file to some extent; witness the much shorter run times for the current "Ovarian" database as against the previous (much larger) "Sarcoma" database! As I remarked up-thread, a lot may depend on whether they can make that file "sticky" (and if they can then retro-fit that change to the MCM1 system, so much the better!) Cheers - Al. |

I noticed we did "finish" ovarian, switch to sarcoma, then switch back to ovarian. Wonder 1) how many more ovarians we have; 2) if sarcoma is finished or we will then switch to sarcoma again; 3) what the next MCM1 target is (e.g. pancreatic and some others).
----------------------------------------Looking forward to more information on MAM1. Looks like they're focusing on psoriatic arthritis. Wonder if they will also focus on rheumatoid and osteo.
