With an OPNG task, there are five tasks per file. And BOINC doesn't look at the task, just at each file.
So, for 100 tasks, you can download 400 files - and still not have a runnable task, |

With an OPNG task, there are five tasks per file. And BOINC doesn't look at the task, just at each file. That is not quite correct. when you would indeed get 100WUs at one time together (I have never seen THAT many), some will make it through with one of the first automatic retry attempts, but it certainly will be able to crunch and upload those before you get another one if you can't sit and hit the [Retry] button... So, for 100 tasks, you can download 400 files - and still not have a runnable task, Ralf |

It is these pesky Byte-sized files that seem to be playing, catch me if you can. Without them, WUs cannot start.

It is these pesky Byte-sized files that seem to be playing, catch me if you can. Without them, WUs cannot start. The BOINC client doesn't know the purpose of a file, so they are downloaded in rather arbitrary order. And if that small "job description/header" file is among those needed for a set of those belonging to one WU, that's totally hit and miss. I have seen some being completed right away and start crunching and some are just sitting there and "holding up traffic" until you can manually force enough retries for all of them. Ralf |

Of course, BOINC could know what a file is associated with - it has all the information. Project, application, task, screensaver, website access, simple view skin, anything else you care to name. But it doesn't bother to find out and hence assign a priority to the download.

But it doesn't bother to find out and hence assign a priority to the download. BOINC is totally agnostic to what the purpose of a file is. And THAT is on purpose. Each and every project that is using the BOINC client/infrastructure is responsible for what it does with the files that are specified for download and upload. BOINC only gets a list of the files to download, and subsequently to upload. And the source and destination for those files. As well as the basic credit system, which internally, is different for WCG, as it originate well before BOINC was established and never bothered to adjust, like other projects, like SETI for example, at some point did. What a project does with any downloaded file, that is solely a matter of the application that is being downloaded for a specific project and BOINC simply can't (and doesn't want to) know what to do with it. After 9 months I think Krembil lost all their credits they had. After 6 years I am leaving WCG for another project on the Boinc list which is functioning as supposed to be.
