Re: Limited workunits for Help Stop TB

Having recently reached sapphire on HSTB, I can say it's a real effort to crunch this project. It's admittedly anecdotal but from what I have seen, it would appear that I rarely get HSTB WUs on the weekends....

Thanks Jay and Keith, great observations. I'm inclined to agree that there's not much on offer at weekends or public holidays. However, yesterday was first working day of the year (data preparation?) and this morning I got lucky (data distribution?) by targeting the suggested times and landed an average of almost 3 WUs per core. If they are the long running variety it will push me 20% of the way to my 5 year goal. I've aborted most of the most recently sent Zika WUs ahead of these HSTs in my queues, to minimise turn-around time. It's perhaps a one-day wonder caused by the public holidays but I'm happy today, thinking that my 5 year goal is actually attainable at the moment. Not happy with the effort required though, don't want to keep it up and will definitely bale out if and when I get to 5 years.

Well, HSTB is really the first project at WCG to present a special challenge to us crunchers trying to crunch it. It won't be the last. There have been other projects in the past that you had to crunch exclusively in order to get the quantities needed for the larger badges. Unfortunately with HSTB, doing that means that your crunchers will be idle a large amount of time. Requesting a nice chunk of work periodically from a different project to keep your machines crunching and otherwise requesting work frequently from your "goal" project is not a new tactic here. However, the scarcity of the HSTB WUs is. My suspicion is that the HSTB researchers are looking at some rather fundamental questions about TB at this point and are not yet able to narrow the focus of the research down to the point that would provide the volumes we are wanting.

Re: Limited workunits for Help Stop TB

I haven't gotten any work for days, even with the 03/33 technique. At least I have made it to 100 days.

Cheers coffee

NixChix, don't give up - as they are still trickling through.

Rather surprisingly (as it has previously been mentioned that no one seemed to receive WU's at a weekend), that I managed to get 3 today - yes, on a Saturday!!!

Me Too! I found 3 in my queue this morning. Maybe Father Christmas was doing another round? (hee-hee)

I'll keep trying gb009761, I'm not giving up. I am grateful that I had a load in the hopper, but gradually have worked through that one windfall, adding a few each morning. It got me to 105 days. But will all get gone in a few hours and nothing new has arrived in days. We'll see how long until some more gets dropped in. I wonder if the 03/33 time has shifted. Has there been a reason given why the flow of HSTB has dropped to a mere 3% of what it was just a scant 6 months ago?

Cheers coffee

not to my knowledge - in fact, I can't recall off the top of my head (I'd have to go and do a bit of digging), as to when we last heard from the HSTB scientists.

Edit: After doing a bit of digging around, I've seen three forum members with the label of "Help Stop TB Scientist" against their name;

There may be more - if so, please add them to this list.

Other than their contribution (the last being over 5 months ago now), there was a thread started by the WCG admin - ErikaT (Help Stop TB project update - November 2016 on the 10th November 2016), stating that there'd be a fuller update "after the Christmas break". So, hopefully, we'll hear from the project (preferably directly from the scientists themselves) in the near future.

Re: Limited workunits for Help Stop TB

Well, I think this weekend has truly blown the 'myth' that WU's aren't sent out at weekends - as on top of yesterdays small windfall, today (Sunday), I received 12 WU's across 2 machines. So, 15 across the two days!!!
