Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

Good idea. I didn't think of that. My youngest is 6 and doesn't bother the phones since they are on the bottom shelf of my nightstand. I was more worried about the ex's cats knocking them around. So far, so good though. They have been running happily like this since last year.

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

I used to have 30 cell phones running in my home. I really didn't have the option of limiting work space. Since then I've had several run their course. However, I'm also not running as many money making apps neither. Hopefully, these serve their purpose well as all of the others so far have paid for themselves within a month or two.

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

I've never ran any money making apps. Never looked into it. Just crunched WCG.

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

It was an easy way to subsidize the hardware and cover the expense of running them. :)

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

Anyone running octa-cores seeing that due to thermal throttling 2 or 3 cores are "parked" or disabled?

Did you not experience wifi issues among the phones? Like some of them were kicked offline by the others (assuming you had all of them connected to one router with 2.4 GHz band)?

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

The sticks I use will run without being plugged in to a TV or monitor, but two of the five need to be plugged in so they can start, then I can unplug them again. The FAHV WUs take 4-5 hours, the OET1 WUs around 9 hours. The power usage is about 4W each. I have opened them and added a small heatsink. They run at 1200-1400MHz.

I have installed the Droid VNC server, so I can run them headless. The Boinc program can also be administered from the Boinc installation on my desktop PC.

I cannot find anymore this app on the store.
Anyone using another workaround (except teamviewer)?

The only 8 core systems I have are odroids, and I dont experience any issues with cores being disabled. But they are different from phones, so I dont know if that helps. I would say to download cpu-z from the play store and keep an eye on thermals. Maybe the phone is disabling cores due to heat? Or maybe some have been disabled due to hardware issues. Just guesses though, not sure.

I have about 10 androids running on my home wifi, in addition to other devices, and never any issues with devices getting kicked off the wifi. If you are having issues with your 2.4GHz, mabye the channel you are using is being shared with another neighbor close by and there is interference. Try changing to a different channel, and make sure the signal strength is good. I use 5GHz on any device that has dual band capability.

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

I am also afraid that if is a thermal limitation, it is not so easy to bypass (you kind of need custom rom with hotplug governor, which is very hard for cheapo phones)

I am also afraid that for a lot of cheap phones with only 2.4GHz is going to be tough to not get kicked out of a low-level router due to all the interference. I mostly wanted to see how Coleslaw was handling this issue :)

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

When I was running that many devices, I had set up a second wireless router and assigned it to a different channel so that A) It wouldn't cause devices to get bumped B) To prevent those devices from bottlenecking the primary home wireless since they were also streaming video. My primary router also does dual band so I as well will utilize 5GHz whenever a device gives me the option. Right now I might have 2 dozen wireless devices on my router and have had no issue with dropping. I have 5 devices at my folks house and typically 3-5 devices at my desk at my job that I have had permission to run. I have a feeling I may have to get to setting up a second wireless device again in the future. I stopped doing it after I moved into a new house. This is the router I use - https://www.asus.com/us/Networking/RTN66R/

As you can see from its specs, it allows for a lot more connections than most routers.
