I have a fan on my dresser. I just point it their direction while I'm gone. :)

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

I have two first gen Moto G's that run 24/7 and push between 7 and 10 units of work each per day. No overheating, no fans required. I may buy some other used phones as a quick/simple WCG solution since computers eat power and cellphones, even tapped out, don't take more than a trickle off the mains.

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

I have a fan on my dresser. I just point it their direction while I'm gone. :)

I found something strange with the ones that I ordered. Two of the three I set up, I used the charging brick and cable that was provided with the phones. The other one I set up with an existing brick that I had laying around. The one using the existing brick has worked well since I plugged it up, but the other two kept stopping computing. Prefs are to use 3/4 processors, don't stop if cpu usage is above a certain percentage, and RAM is set to 100%. I had to keep unplugging and plugging them back in. So I purchased a charging station and plugged them in to that (still using the cable provided with the phones) thinking that would fix the problem. Still kept stopping the workunits. So I found two existing micro usb cables in a box and switched to those, so far they have been working all day without stopping. Not sure if I just got some bad cables or what, but just in case anyone else runs into the same weirdness, try the cables first.

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

Over on TSBT, we use a lot of the android TV boxes. Given the processor speed (2Ghz) and cost, I like the S802 or S812 quad core android TV boxes like this http://a.co/9hkghud . I'm seen them as cheap as $33 also. Just pay close attention to the full item spec and don't get fooled into buying 1 GB box or different CPU.

The 1.8Ghz quad core RK3288 TV boxes are the fastest, but they cost a little more. The RK3368 is the 1.2 Ghz big-little CPU. As soon as we get NativeBoinc running on 5.1 will give that a test.

Just make sure you get 2GB RAM and don't be fooled by the S805 models. They're much slower. Also, we run NativeBoinc because you can connect to the Boinc Client from other Boinc Managers/BoincTasks but it requires android version 4.4 or lower. Won't run on 5.1 or later but we're working on an updated version so we can use the newer RK3368 octa core TV boxes which ship with android 5.1.

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

I just recently bought a Motorola Moto G4 Play phone. After shipping and taxes it was $137. The reason I looked at it is that it is stock Android (which means none of the bloatware). It is Android v6. I could be mistaken, but I think that only some tablets have Android v7. Anyway, I am very happy with the Moto G4, and I would argue that it is one heck of a bang for the buck. Runs BOINC fine. And actually, it's has extremely good battery life - which is an issue for BOINC, because BOINC (at default settings) only runs when the phone is being charged. And I only charge this phone every couple of days. So the work unit deadline becomes an issue. Good bang for the buck, though. If you're looking at the Google Pixel phone because it is stock Android, you might check out the Moto G4 - may be all you need.

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

Not sure if anyone is interested, but I just picked this up on Amazons prime day: https://www.amazon.com/Okra-Desktop-Universal...Smartphones/dp/B019D0KPSY I will use it to neatly organize my slowly growing army of android devices that I use for crunching, and will find a nice size fan to put behind it to circulate a little more air in between the devices. So if you are looking for a better way to organize all your androids, like I was, and have access to amazon prime, this might be a good way.

"This item ships to Italy. Want it Thursday, July 13?"

Got a BreezePro (pod meter speed regulated) plugged into one of the USB ports of the VDSL Modem/Router as it got way too hot in the cabinet. Now it's so cool, it's eerie. 7 Proper short ribbon cables will set you back more than hub ;>)

I looked up the breeze pro, unfortunately looks to be discontinued; pickings are slim. I found a breeze mobile, which looks promising. I like that it is flexible to direct air where needed. I already have a few short cables I can use, but would be nice if they were included with the station.

There was an option below that hub to get it with what looked feeble stuff at USD 51.99 or so, hence why mentioning the ribbon cables I'm using... fast charge is really fast charge with those, and that's what my tabled needs else the battery drains.
