Oh, didn't see that option. Mine should be here tomorrow, but am in the middle of moving so the phones are stored away for the next couple weeks. Once I get everything set up I will report back.

I'm thinking about stacking some of these: http://www.hardkernel.com/main/products/prdt_info.php?g_code=G150229074080
----------------------------------------From a price performance ratio is this a good solution? From my understanding it also works with Android 4.4. At least they have Android images for download. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Lieutenant Wurst at Oct 28, 2017 3:46:45 PM] |

I'm thinking about stacking some of these: http://www.hardkernel.com/main/products/prdt_info.php?g_code=G150229074080 From a price performance ratio is this a good solution? From my understanding it also works with Android 4.4. At least they have Android images for download. Not sure about the HC1, but I run two of the odroid xu4 systems. The xu4 is a bit more expensive, but I dont see much differences in specs other than the HC1 has onboard SATA and the xu4 has USB3. The xu4 will run on eMMC, or microSD cards. Looks like the HC1 will only run on microSD. I have one running android 4.4.x on microSD, and the other is running android 7.1.x on an eMMC. The eMMC is amazing fast to boot, but other than that not much differences for compute. I have upgraded both of mine to have a larger heatsink, as well as a 40mm noctua fan that sits on top. I don't even see a heatsink on the HC1, so you may run into thermal throttling. The odroid forums have a great android 7 build by member voodik, who seems to be a major contributor. Just download that lineage OS and use the odroid flash utility and you will be good to go. Android 4.4 runs fine, but severely antiquated. If you get an xu4 and are looking for the aftermarket heatsink/fan, let me know and I can link you to the ones I bought. |

Thank you for your insights! This is really helpful!
----------------------------------------The tech detail tab says it has microSD. But you are probably right about the thermal issue. Maybe I go for the XU4 as well. Would be great if you could send me the link for the heatsink/fan. Did you stack your XU4 or do you have some kind of case? This was the reason for me why I took a closer look at the HC1. Could can stack them, why is kind of an advantage when you have more than one or two. It's great that their is an Android 7 version in the community. KitKat seemed a little bit outdated, but ok, if it's just for crunching. EDIT: Ok just realized that the aluminium frame is for cooling the CPU. So might work without a fan. I bought a craft box from Michaels (craft store in the US) and drilled 4 holes using the odroid as a template. I then used standoffs to secure the first one to the box, and by combining other longer standoffs, mounted the second one above the first leaving room for the heatsink/fan. On either end of the box, I cut some circles out and drilled 4 holes to mount 120mm fans in a push/pull design. The 120s are overkill, but run lower rpms and push more air so they are pretty quiet. For the fan screws, I just went to home depot and picked up some machine screws long enough to go through the box and fan, and used washers and nuts to secure. No rattles. This is what I bought: Heatsink: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZRDRX8...o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Fan: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NEMGCI...o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (make sure to get the 5v one) Standoffs: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XQ33Y9...o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I'm not sure how to upload a photo of my current setup, but if needed I'll see what I can do. |

From gearbest I bought a H96 Pro TV Dongle with 8 Cores for about 35 euros:
----------------------------------------advantages are teamviewer with full remote control, no battery, direct cable, easy flashing in case you brick it, small package for scaling up disadvantages are that for flasing you need to run chinese software (not too hapy although virustotal did not find any issues), not so efficient as stand alone phone charging (4W for 8 cores pretty sweet), gets pretty hot around 80 degC |

Is there a way to remove part of the cover? I would bet the chip is not even covered by a heatsink, and if it is hitting 80C you are likely getting thermal throttling. If the cover could separate and half of it come off, I bet a lot of heat would dissipate just by having open air around it.

There is a "8GB sticker" on the cover, and it should be possible (by brute force) to remove the cover, and add the heat spreader.
----------------------------------------It is indeed thermal throttling at 1.5/0.67 and even 1.2/0.5 for each of the 4 cores cluster Still, the delta for CPU Time / Elapsed Time (hours) is under 3%, so acceptable |

I wonder how much difference cover on vs off would do for the throttling. I am guessing this is plugged into a hdmi port on the back of a tv or monitor, so you probably wouldn't even see it, correct?
The only reason I haven't looked into compute sticks more is because of the heat issue, and worry that it will shorten the lifespan considerably. I run a couple of odroid xu4 with android installed, and have aftermarket heatsinks and fans on them to keep them cooler. They are more expensive, but very good little systems. I have debated trying out some of these android tv boxes, but again, worried about temps. |
