Re: New tasks

I hope everyone is doing well, and have not caught corona.

I'm curious to know what you all are doing to keep yourselves occupied.
Myself, I'm editing an Ice Hockey podcast, and playing games with my son.
Doing everything I can to NOT do gardening, though the wife enjoys it.

Re: New tasks

Well Steve, in my case things are relatively normal. I'm a software engineer working for a small company with about 35 employees. We have 7 developers and the 3 testers, and we're of course all working from home. Some developers worked from home a couple of days a week anyway. So basically the 25 minutes each way that I'd spend walking to work is now spent partly lying in bed and partly working, so I'm doing slightly more hours. The lack of exercise appears to be being offset by the additional stress and worry so I'm actually losing weight! There is talk about taking a pay cut to help the company survive, and I was selling an apartment which has fallen through (the sale, not the apartment!!!), so my biggest worry is money. However, I suspect my position is a hell of a lot better than many others'.

The irony about the company moving online is that the development team at least seem to be much more productive, even with some of the team having to look after their kids too. No irritating distractions and office noise. Only time will tell what affect it had on the rest of the company.

My type 1 diabetic son has moved in for the duration, which is weird, but he's much easier to live with than when he moved out a couple of years ago smile. We've all been getting out for a walk each day, and I have a relatively big house so we're not going stir crazy just yet. However, it's very early days, and I feel very sorry for the young families living in small houses. Our evenings are being spent in much the same way as they ever were really, apart from spending more time watching Channel 4 News than usual, and more phone calls with family.

Judging by the temporary hospitals and mortuaries being built, things are going to get a lot worse very soon. I hope you all stay safe and well.

Covid 19 Distractions

We're all well here thanks DMNI, hope everyone else is too.

Loved the clapping at 8PM I hope that continues to be well supported as it was really cool, hat's off to health workers everywhere - so brave! hugs

Sorry the next bit is so long, I just got carried away.

Not sure you guys will remember but I did a charity ride last year and am not generally a cyclist, however with my fear of the ride I threw some tech at the problem and bought a 'smart' home trainer, you bolt your cycles back wheel onto it and it simulates ascents, descents etc. I loved it - riding with different people all over the world. So after the ride I carried on doing it and entered a league so raced every Thursday night, I was often last but didn't care as it was my main exercise and there was a lot of banter in the online community. So since being stuck at home I've been on it every single day, it's my Covid-19 thing now. Using the 'Bkool' platform (quite buggy but the most scenic rides) I've been riding other peoples video routes for 21 consecutive days now, only on average an hour a day but it means I can tour around Europe (or further afield) sweating up the hills and trying to keep the weight gain to a minimum. We've recently added 'Discord' to our tech armoury so that now we can chat to each other during the rides, never used it before but it's similar to whatsapp messaging and also there's an audio (push to talk) channel so we can talk tactics and moan about how sore we are. Although during the Thursday races the heavy breathing can sound a bit ... well ..wrong. smile

The only way I can think to combine it with crunching is that the artificial resistance is generated by electromagnets and produces a bit of energy not much, my last race was 270watts for 40mins and I'm sure not all of that could be captured but it would be cool to actually use it rather than just burning it off as heat. Maybe charge some small batteries and run some Raspberry Pi's off it. There is a brand of smart trainer that can charge your phone but I guess they don't feel there's a market for anything beyond that - shame - any engineers out there?

Should get my 50year SCC today. Glad I could get there after such a big gap in tasks, I was stuck at 45years since last year.

Re: Covid 19 Distractions

all good here thanks.

For me its almost business as usual, I work for a small company about 20 people and we mainly make pc games, videos and graphic stuff and i often work from home, now we are all working from home and as DC said productivity is actually up due to less distractions.
We use discord too, its a great tool and can do everything from video chats to screen sharing and text channels along with being able to restrict what people can do and see so we can have managers only channels etc and its free to use which is a big bonus at the minute.

As im on 12 weeks shielding im very limited in what i can do, I'm not meant to go outside other than the garden but i am keeping busy with work in the daytime and some good old puzzles in the evenings and then the normal computer games and tv as well.

@DMNI i dont blame you on NOT gardening, i hate that too which is why when we redone the garden here we went with astroturf. never have to cut the grass again smile

@mac1 congrats on the 50 year scc, my first 50 year is going to be mip and i think that will be in about a month.
one of my friends is really into cycling and does exactly what you are doing and he loves it, i helped him to look into ways of charging stuff while cycling last year but its very inefficient but this article explains it better than me if your interested https://www.cyclingabout.com/best-dynamo-usb-...ycle-touring-bikepacking/
he went for the Cinq Plug5 Plus for his road bike, not cheap at ~£250.

Stay safe all

I went to the supermarket today and saw a guy with a huge paella, 10 tins of Old El Paso Refried Beans, half a dozen burritos and a sombrero in his trolley.

I thought to myself, Hispanic buying!

I had no idea where that was going. smile

<edit> FYI - Every week I've setup a meeting with my work colleagues as a social hour just to keep in touch, I dropped that joke in yesterdays one unsure of how it would work on a VC but they loved it. So Thankyou! biggrin </edit>

It's not original. In fact, it appears to have gone viral smile

Re: Covid 19 Distractions

Calling in, hope you're all well!

I'm still suffering with the headaches I've been having since Nov/Dec last year, but they do seem to be getting a bit milder as my blood-pressure drops a bit (from 167/97 in December to 130/86 this week), but no COVID-19 symptoms thankfully.

I'd already been working from home every Wednesday for about a year, so switching over to working from home at the beginning of last week hasn't really been too much of a change. I did bring my spare monitor and keyboard/mouse home from the office, though, and set up a proper work-station, just to give me that feeling of "arriving at and leaving work".

As someone who's naturally not overly outgoing, I've found it pretty easy to switch to only going out when I need shopping - the bigger change for me was switching to weekly shops, as I'd normally nip into the supermarket on the way home from work every 1-2 days and just pick up the odd thing here and there.
