I've done some crunching of a different sort, regarding my electricity bill. I've been comparing my Octopus Energy "Flexible Octopus" tariff against the half-hour variable "Agile Octopus" tariff. These figures are unconfirmed (never trust software, especially if you're written it yourself), but since 9th October 2018 (so, nearly 16 months), the figures are:
----------------------------------------Flexible Octopus: £828.71 Agile Octopus: £715.92 Wow! I'll be switching as soon as I've tripled-checked the figures. The next stage is to write some software to turn my crunching on when the rates are low.

How'd the triple check go, that's quite a saving?! @unsmurf, wow what beast/cloud set-up have you just turned on? Awesome stats starting to appear! ![]()

hi,
----------------------------------------i finally got round to setting up all the work pc's to run it when they arent busy as they are on 24/7 anyway, still got 2 pc's to setup when i find time. half of them are 6 cores/12 threads xeon processors (they chew throu rendering video great). Im still trying to find an optimal setup for them so the stats might fluctate a bit. i am looking at upgrading my personal pc shortly currently an i7-3770k and im thinking of going with either amd ryzen 9 or a threadripper but need to see which will be better for me as i do game/software development, video rendering, gaming and of course this. so any suggestions are welcome |

There's an AMD efficiency battle raging quietly in the background in the blue corner DMNI running a Threadripper x1950 and in the red corner DCR with a shiny new Ryzen 9 3900X. Not quite video rendering but heavy multi threaded work and if watts consumed are a factor in your decision then it should be an interesting outcome. I'm really interested in this too, the Ryzen 9's look very tempting.

the electric bill is the cheapest thing we have when you look at all our IT equipment and software licenses, think we spent in the region of £50,000 last year on software alone and yes i have permission to run it, i am the IT deptartment and the boss is happy as long as the computers work when the staff need them.
----------------------------------------im not too fussed on the watts side but the heat output and cooling will have more of an effect but i am tempted by the Ryzen 9 3950x (16/32) with backup option of the ThreadRipper 3960X (24/48). i will have to have a look at some of the stats and see how they are performing for others. |

The next stage is to write some software to turn my crunching on when the rates are low. How'd the triple check go, that's quite a saving?! The triple check has confirmed that I'm not crazy, although I hadn't noticed the increased standing charge which adds another £11 on. So far, I've managed to write a web page that displays the unit rates for the next (up to) 12 hours - the rates are updated just after 4pm. I've also managed to get my crunching PC to turn on using wake-on-lan (which required a new network driver). The next stage is to get it to turn off remotely, but only when I'm not using it (this is going to require SSH, and because it's Windows it's harder than it should be, but I know exactly how to do it). Finally, I need to put it all together and use my Synology NAS to turn the crunching PC on when the unit rate drops below a certain level (probably 5p/unit) and turn it off again when it goes back up. It's all looking good so far, and I'll report back in a week or so. Here's my current graph of unit rates http://36arn.co.uk/energy/ What I have learned, which is not immediately obviously until you start to switch to the tariff, is that yes it's variable, but there is a 12p/unit fiddle factor applied between 4pm and 7pm, so it's more like a social engineering experiment than I initially thought. However, this morning at 3am the rate dropped to 0.86p/unit, so that's when I set the dishwasher to turn on!

Still waiting on the new coolant, once I get it in my cooler we can start the challenge. I think it will be a close contest, though if your projections are right, you can possibly produce more than I. No bets on which CPU is more efficient! You win that hands down. ![]() |
