Genius Dave, love it. The wonders of Linux/Unix...
Just invoke using cron every so often... wakeup.sh 5.0 AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF One for the non-discerning programmers amongst you!

The wife would kill me! Could sell my 1950x, MB and cooler and get a 3950x, my electricity bill would certainly be lower. ![]() |

Unbelievably, my off-peak crunching Heath-Robinson solution actually works! The basic components are:
----------------------------------------- Some software that downloads the unit rates every day, just after 4pm when they're published, and stores them in a database (which I was doing anyway, to see if my new variable tariff is actually a good idea) - A simple web server that is able to return the unit rates (as a pretty graph) or the current rate as a number. - A small unix cron script that runs every 30 minutes (because that's how often the rates change), and gets the current rate from my server, and sends a wake-on-lan packet to my cruncher if the rate has dropped below the trigger threshold, or sends the word "shutdown" to a specific port on my cruncher if the rate has gone above the trigger threshold. - A stupendously crap Windows Service that listens for the word "shutdown", and promptly and unceremoniously hibernates the machine immediately! It swiitched on twice last night at 2:30pm and 3:30pm (for 30 minutes in each case). I'd deliberately set the threshold to 5.6p for testing, and it worked beautifully. I'm available for hire, very unreasonable rates!

Thanks to Storm Dennis, I'm actually being paid to use electricity between 2am and 6am tomorrow, so I'll be crunching at full speed. I'm also trying to persuade my partner to do the hoovering and cook the Sunday dinner a bit early!

I'm also trying to persuade my partner to do the hoovering and cook the Sunday dinner a bit early! Good luck with that! I don't mind being up in the early hours but my better half would go nuts if she doesn't get enough sleep, never mind not sticking to her routine. ![]() |

I've about 20 AA rechargables hanging around that we don't use any more to start you off :)
