Re: Threadripper vs Ryzen 9

Do you want to do another run? This time using PBO?
I would also like to do a run with hyper-threading disabled.

Yeah, why not! Give me a few days to fiddle with the PBO settings, just to make me sure it doesn't actually make things worse!

Re: Threadripper vs Ryzen 9

Very interesting test results, thanks for sharing those.
Thought I'd try and lift some numbers from my stats for comparison.
Results from 19th Feb, I guess when you did your test?
24hours period and Watts measured at the socket.
Results Watts Watts per day Watts per unit PC
127 162 3888 30.61 16core Xeon v4 1cpu
403 374 8976 22.27 48core Xeon (8160) 2cpu
151 200 4800 31.78 24core Xeon V4 2cpu

The v4's are well off the pace, nearly twice as power hungry as the 3900X. The 16core is being sunset today as it happens (going to dad). I think I'll gut the other one and refresh it later in the year. AMD is looking a strong contender right now.

That's very interesting Andy (Mac1). The Xeon 8160 is pretty close.
If you take "Watts at the wall" as the unit of measurement for mine 3900X it works out at about 21.7 Wh/unit. My storage and RAM are pretty energy efficient, but I do have an 8 or 9W hit from the graphics card (4 to 5% of my total energy consumption).

Integrated graphics on my board so a few watts saved there, plus I suppose there is an inherent efficiency from 2 CPUs on one board.
Glad I'm not so far behind the curve. smile
16core has gone now so there'll be a drop in my output.

cheers,
Andy

Re: Threadripper vs Ryzen 9

Yes, congratulations Tom, and also DMNI for his Diamond 20 a week or so ago. Also, welcome to the team MattC, who seems to be quite a heavy hitter smile

Re: Threadripper vs Ryzen 9

Thinking a bit more about Intel competitiveness where there shouldn't have been any - were your challenge stats generated on Windows or Linux, I was on Ubuntu 18.0.4 so perhaps I got an advantage there?
Also I had a rolling start as in there were tasks running from the previous day that would have completed on the day I took the stats from, wondering if you guys started at 0%. That would've given my stats a big boost.

Re: Threadripper vs Ryzen 9

We were running on Windows 10, Andy.
Our method was as follows:
1. Start with plenty of units in the queue, none in progress, none waiting to be uploaded.
2. Network disabled.
3. Run for 16 hours and then count the number of completed units waiting to be uploaded.
4. Add up the in-progress units pro-rata.

Hope everyone is keeping well?

All this talk about new CPUs is making me very jealous!

Re: Threadripper vs Ryzen 9

Hi Guys,

I'm going to take a break from WCG in order to do Folding@home to help with their Coronavirus project. I will return, don't know when though.
Only my main machine will switch so I will still be returning some results.

Covid-19

That's interesting DMNI,

I had a look at Rosetta@home is that the project you are using?

Tried to access the UK BOINC Team forum but it's locked down pretty tight also the code they gave me was indecipherable.

The project is this one.

Hopefully it can produce some good results.
