Good Morning All.
----------------------------------------The thing is Steven, some members use their real names as user id, (me for example), and by monitoring output you could deduce when they were on holiday. I'm sure there are easier ways to do it though. Yes, I use my real name too but a) I crunch through holidays (power cuts permitting) and b) I doubt anyone cares to come to Santa Cruz.

Good Morning All.
----------------------------------------I would, just to steal your home made Ice Cream ;} Alas I haven't made any for a while. As we are heading for winter the next batch will probably be October.

Nothing like planning ahead... "To get the token, you must first sign our Data Processing Agreement to ensure that you're willing to comply with certain requirements about how the API data must be processed. We are still finalizing the text of this Agreement and will email you as soon as it's ready." Dave that is certainly nothing like planning ahead. Has there been any news / response from WCG / BOINC? I must admit to missing my statistics (not just yours, every ones)

Good Morning All.
----------------------------------------I am sure it is not my computers taking a quantum leap in efficiency but SCC seems to have gone completely crazy in its points generosity. I normally skulk around the 65,000 to 75,000 points a day for ~ 18-19 days CPU time but over the last three days my totals have leapt to the high 80,000s and today there is even a promise of exceeding 90,000. What a shame it cannot be seen in my usual statistics sources which, as we all know, have been sabotaged by WCG / IBM

This GDPR debacle, which I believe can only end badly for us stats aggregators, has totally ruined my interest in WGC. I don't see how WCG can safely and legally allow 3rd parties to have access to the stats without making pretty much everything opt-in and/or anonymising the data. And what about the data I'm storing on everyone? In theory I should delete that too, because it currently infringes the GDPR rules I believe. I'm starting to think that perhaps 27 years CPU time on MCM, and 65 years in total, may well be a good point to throw in the towel. Currently I'm running one Android tablet... a single weedy core just to keep my hand in.
----------------------------------------I think I'll give it a couple of days to see if anything emerges from WCG/IBM, and then I'll turn my web server offline, which will mean your signatures will disappear. Let's keep everything crossed that something sensible and meaningful can emerge from this, sooner rather than later.

Would be sorry to see you go, if that is the case.

Dave Please please hang in there - everyone is having knee jerk reactions and I'm sure that in time all will be resolved. WCG / IBM are enormous organisations with a built in inertia. I know that you crunch for something other than the points so don't give up just because the stats are screwed temporarily. We're all here to support you in whatever way we can - don't chuck it in without a fight!

Dave,
I understand your frustration at the slow speed things are moving, and I'm glad that Juan has admitted that they didn't communicate well enough and early enough, but once lawyers are involved you know that things will be mired in treacle -- even when money is involved (which it isn't here). But if you believe in donating computing power for humanitarian reasons, then you shouldn't give up completely just because of that. Personally I think that things will settle down once the general principles of GDPR are better understood by everyone. In the case of the UK team, haven't we all already opted-in by joining the team? We know what that involves and what is done with our data. And just look back at the enthusiasm that came from us all when you started work on your stats site -- we all want it !! OK, I suspect that the need to remove data for people who have not donated for some time, or who have specifically requested to have their data removed, might give you a few challenges, but that's all they are -- challenges (or "opportunities" if you believe in all the motivational double-speak). And I'm sure your coding skills are more than able to meet them. But you shouldn't think of these changes as WCG clobbering you. Instead you should think of it as a need to properly respect our rights that had previously been overlooked by everyone and is, at last, being addressed. Please think about how much your work has helped to motivate the rest of the team. I think that that should motivate you, now. ![]() |
