Thats an understatement. Just imangine if all projects went GPU. Think WCG would be looking for more projects to run instead of projects waiting in line to use WCG The majority of users will have their systems bog down, start complaining about GPU, quit crunching WCG. More complaints that their GPU card is not supported. More accusations and demands by the users. Old computers no longer supported. 32 core computers will do a single WU at a time on their GPU card. Frustration will then abound. It will be great.Once we get to that stage, then the science projects that cannot be run on a GPU will be ignored, WCG will no longer service as many projects and then has no value to the scientific community and dies a horrible death. Great planning on your part. LONG LIVE THE GPU! You should be in a drama movie. Sheeesh! ![]() Didn't take long for the resident troll to show up did it? ![]()

This thread has descended to the lowest level...disappointing....please cease and let the app settle down. I think it's a wonderful advance over the CPU project and have acquired another cheap PC to process the tasks. Very exciting to have this and I hope we can all contribute to better cancer diagnostic and treatment procedures by processing CPU and GPU HCC tasks..

Been reading thru all of this and instead of saying who will do what when, etc how about we stop and say that we all are adults( or should be) and we make decisions based on the available information and if your machine seems to stutter a bit using the video card then you as an individual have the choice to either accept that stuttering or turn off the GPU part of the app.
----------------------------------------Simple huh and for what it's worth I'm seeing the same slowness of the vid and yes, it's a little bit of a pain BUT I'll learn to live with it as the amount of work the GPU is doing is incredible.. End of rant and have a good day folks. ![]() |

It just shows that distributed computing is becoming a specialized pastime, like anything else after a while (model airplanes, bicycles or anything else). It started out as a screensaver application, but moved on to bigger and better things. I just do what I can that does not produce much impact on my main PC, and move everything else that is too GPU or CPU intensive onto dedicated PCs that are sitting in the corner. It is up or out, which may not appeal to everyone all the time, but that is progress I suppose.
At some point WCG may need to reserve some "easy" projects to get people started in the hobby, since you can't start out at the top. But this is the only GPU project at the moment, so we are hardly at that point yet. |

Back to an earlier question in this thread. Has anyone successfully used an app_info.xml to run more than one HCC GPU task at a time?
----------------------------------------When running one POEM GPU task, my GPU utilization is ~25% so in that case it makes sense to schedule more than one GPU task to run at one time. On WCG, when running one HCC GPU task, my GPU utilization is >90% while the GPU is running it's part. From that perspective, it doesn't make much sense to try running more than one task at a time. However, there are a few minutes of startup and shutdown time on the CPU when the GPU is idle. I've wondered if it would help to schedule two HCC tasks so that one is running on the GPU while the other is running on the CPU. I am willing to try if someone can help me with the correct parameters. I think I have some of them figured out. Does anybody know what the plan_class value should be?
