Re: Good job!

How many work units are you running ?

My 5870 is only being used about 50% of the time at 85% utilization. The other 50% of the time the cpu is being used.

Should I run 2 work units ? If so how do I configure it ?

Re: Good job!

Hello,

create the app_info.xlm file in the Projects folder with this content using the "Editor":

<app_info>
<app>
<name>hcc1</name>
<user_friendly_name>Help Conquer Cancer</user_friendly_name>
</app>
<file_info>
<name>wcg_hcc1_img_6.56_windows_intelx86__ati_hcc1</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<file_info>
<name>hcckernel.cl.6.56</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<app_version>
<app_name>hcc1</app_name>
<version_num>656</version_num>
<platform>windows_intelx86</platform>
<plan_class>ati_hcc1</plan_class>
<avg_ncpus>1.0</avg_ncpus>
<max_ncpus>1.0</max_ncpus>
<coproc>
<type>ATI</type>
<count>0.5</count>
</coproc>
<file_ref>
<file_name>wcg_hcc1_img_6.56_windows_intelx86__ati_hcc1</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
<file_ref>
<file_name>hcckernel.cl.6.56</file_name>
<open_name>hcckernel.cl</open_name>
</file_ref>
</app_version>
</app_info>

and your Card will run 2 Tasks.

Re: Good job!

I am running a similar app_info file and running 4 HCC WUs + SN2S or remaining CPU cores. Works kind of fine, but I started getting Invalid WU validations now and then... Running GPU @ stock (HD7970). GPU utilization 89-92%.

The vast majority of WUs are valid though. Still, may be good to keep in mind for others perhaps?

EDIT: will perhaps try to exclude SN2S and see if I still get the problem...

I'm just running 1 on each 5870 card, else I get stability problem, and it takes around 3 min. and 15 sec to complete a work unit.

You can try running 2 wu, if so your app_info.xml file shuld look someting like this...

<app_info>
<app>
<name>hcc1</name>
<user_friendly_name>Help Conquer Cancer</user_friendly_name>
</app>
<file_info>
<name>wcg_hcc1_img_6.56_windows_intelx86__ati_hcc1</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<file_info>
<name>hcckernel.cl.6.56</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<app_version>
<app_name>hcc1</app_name>
<version_num>656</version_num>
<platform>windows_intelx86</platform>
<plan_class>ati_hcc1</plan_class>
<avg_ncpus>1</avg_ncpus>
<max_ncpus>1</max_ncpus>
<coproc>
<type>ATI</type>
<count>0.5</count>
</coproc>
<file_ref>
<file_name>wcg_hcc1_img_6.56_windows_intelx86__ati_hcc1</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
<file_ref>
<file_name>hcckernel.cl.6.56</file_name>
<open_name>hcckernel.cl</open_name>
</file_ref>
</app_version>
</app_info>

Re: Good job!

If upping the number of work units makes you unstable, you must have overclocked your machine and it's not stable anyways. I run 9 work units with my 7950, not a single invalid or errored WU with my 1150Mhz core (1.218V) and 1400Mhz memory (1.7V) overclock alongisde my RAM overclocked to 1800Mhz, CPUNB to 2500Mhz, and CPU to 4Ghz, I can vouch that my system is completely stable under the most extreme conditions.

Re: Good job!

I was running 2 work units for about 4 or 5 hours, then I got:

"Message from server: This project doesn't support computers of type anonymous" and no new work downloaded so it sat idle.

Is a bug in the system or are they putting measures in place to prevent app_info.xml ?

When I look at "Results Status" many came back with a status of "Error".

Re: Good job!

I've been running an app_info file for more than 24hrs here and no signs of any problems because of it.

"computers of type anonymous"

Is the BOINC Manager not recognizing your hardware properly? Maybe you should check the log file, and post it here for help, and see if it has properly identified you hardware.

Re: Good job!

Kind of odd speculations, when the app_info was upfront stated by WCG as, "we'll allow it [so you can run more than 1 task at a time on a card], but we wont support it either. Support is member to member". If such blocking measures were taken, we'd been told. First rules if some goes suddenly weird:

1) Did I really not change anything in the interim?
2) Did I make the app_info changes or put the app_info in place before or after the tasks were received? (Server message applies to new work)
3) Did I boot after making configuration/driver changes?

Separately, some work must have reported for cores/gpu's to go idle. Were these tasks non-error (Valid / Pending Validation/Verification)?

Whilst, you don't tell us what was running 4 or 5 hours? Don´t tell us they were HCC-CPU tasks. The project average for HCC-CPU tasks is 1.5 hours.

This question keeps cropping up: What I have gathered from conversations is, that if you start specifying an app_info and include CPU science info, it can be for only 1 [WCG] science, but stand to be corrected on that. True / False? Seeing multiple comment to say that the other CPU cores can be filled with non-WCG CPU sciences, guess that is a True.

It's an old problem actually.

One of the 5870 cards, the oldest, is unstable and it is not overclocked, I have the same problem in other projects so it seams just to be a bad card but if I don't stress it too much it works just fine. If I try to run 2 workunits the catalyst driver will crash after running 5-6 hours and restart or the computer will hung or reboot.
