Re: HCC1 GPU Testing - Round 4

Even after Windows goes to production it could be some time before Linux and OSX are added.

I have switched back to 100% Linux and I don't want to go back to Windows (GPU or no GPU)...
So it looks like I won't be participating in GPU crunching anytime soon. sad
I guess that also goes for the CFSW project until Linux can run unlimited on that too...
Oh well , there are other worthy causes to contribute to.

Re: HCC1 GPU Testing - Round 4

Agreed: I have no intention of editing any files to run HCC tasks....WCG has been my number 1 choice for a long time, but POEM is pulling me away....

Guys, let's not rush to judgement. We're not even done beta teasting yet.

Re: HCC1 GPU Testing - Round 4

If this project uses the GPU the way that Folding does, there is probably no quick relief in sight for mouse lag and videos (or games for that matter), except to suspend it while you are doing those things. That is basically because GPUs aren't very controllable the way that CPUs are. There are some best practices that might help though, such as turning on the Aero interface in Win7 or eliminating unnecessary Visual Effects (in Performance Options under Win7).

But the Folding app is still struggling to reduce GPU usage to a controllable degree; their latest client had a setting for it in theory, but it is not functional yet. And they have been at it for years. Maybe HCC1 can do better, since they invoke the CPU more than the Folding app does, which may give them an additional degree of control, but that I don't really know about.

As for myself, I usually just don't Fold on the display card, but use dedicated cards for that. I will do the same for HCC1 whenever they find out what works best.

Re: HCC1 GPU Testing - Round 4

Cheers John

I agree nanoprobe no one is forcing me to run these projects

but if I am forced to run GPUGrid because GPUWCG causes my PC to become unusable then that doesn't bode well for the science being done here

..just saying wink

I only want the best for what is my natural home after UD.com

They haven't let me down once in 7 1/2 years and the dedication and the resources that the IBM team have put into "this great thing" is and always has been just awesome

From another thread.
As far as GPU work goes. We may have another round of beta testing during the challenge [SekeRob edit: May 10-15]. However, we are waiting for a review of some data by the researchers. If that is completed, we may be able to run some GPU work. If we are REALLY REALLY lucky and the next beta goes well, then we will run a scaled up beta as we will be nearing acceptance of the application. There are a lot of things that have to go well for that to happen though so we will wait and see. Your competitors should be aware though that it will be a beta test and so unexpected things are likely to happen (and additional steps are required to sign up).

Re: HCC1 GPU Testing - Round 4

Hello everyone!
I apologize, but I'm too lazy to read all the posts in all GPU topics so I want to ask my question here. Is there anything about using Intel HD 4000 iGPU? Like in new i7-3770. As far as I know it supports OpenCL - just like AMD's integrated graphics (for example HD 6550D in A8-3850). As I can see from the first page of this topic, Sumo GPU (i.e. HD 6550D) will be compatible with HCC. Now I'm going to buy a new hardware and so I choose between LGA 1155 (i7-3770) and FM1 (A8-3850). And it looks like that with help of it's IGP A8 will give more output. At least in this project.
But it would be wonderful if it's possible to use 16 cores of HD 4000, because than x86 part of i7 may give more to other projects (in compare with A8). Going to use IGP only.
P. S. As for me it would be very good if developers add such possibility - Intel's integrated graphics are quite popular and using it may save somebody's life. Please, don't be lazy - cancer is a real problem. I know it very good.

Re: HCC1 GPU Testing - Round 4

Hi,

You don't need to read all the posts if feeling lazy. The "Search" option center right at top of screen gives advanced functionality with Boolean query definitions. So try entering there:

HD AND 4000 OR HD4000.

This query gives 9 specific post hits including your post and if you do the same 10 hits including my post.

If thinking of "on CPU" GPU function use, the world is years away of using that for distributed computing. This first attempt with HCC is a pathfinder for WCG. Many plans for the years to come... piccolo passi.

Re: HCC1 GPU Testing - Round 4

For the moment, the graphics-capability of the i7-3770 may be used to render the UI-visuals, leaving the discrete-GPU free for GPU-computing prospects.
