Re: HCC1 GPU Testing - Round 4

We are looking at the results from the previous beta. In particular, we are looking at the invalid results and the differences they show. The differences are fairly small but larger than the range of variance we have accepted previously for this project. We are discussing with the researchers about what the proper course of action is. Once we can reach some conclusions, we will then be able to make some plans about how to resolve the issue. Hopefully we will be able to get some answers soon.

Any idea when OpenCL apps are coming to OSX? I know the last 2 versions of OSX have open CL baked into the OS. Apple was one of the original backers of the Open CL initiative. I also am running out all my long running WU to then updated to BOINC 7.0.x for full BOINC support of Open CL.

Re: HCC1 GPU Testing - Round 4

No dates yet for HCC GPU on Linux or OSX. It definitely will not be before the Windows version is promoted to production. Even after Windows goes to production it could be some time before Linux and OSX are added.

Thanks,
armstrdj

Not good news for Linux or OSX users. But it's better than not knowing.

Thanks for the update!

Re: HCC1 GPU Testing - Round 4

Looking forward to media centre stuttering sometime soon smile

If someone here can write an app_info file for you that will use less of the GPU that will probably resolve the shuddering issue. I had to do the same thing to run Milkeyway. Fortunately their website had those files to be found. I would think that there are people here with the expertise to construct one of the files and make it available.

Re: HCC1 GPU Testing - Round 4

We need to asked the tech for:
Does WCG supports "Anonymous platform"?

Does the app has parameters to reduced the load?

If an app_info file is what's needed couldn't this be part of the generic roll out of the WCG GPU app?

If it isn't - the standard - then we will lose people in droves.

No ordinary cruncher is going to want to edit a script file just so they can continue to watch Media Centre, or move their mouse around the screen smoothly, while their GPU allocates the left over 85% to the grid.

If it was all script files and compiling it yourself we'd all be watching MythTV

But we're not. We're watching TV on Windows 7 Home Premium

Cos it just works

The WCG has always been of the just works quality. Let's not sacrifice this now.

Re: HCC1 GPU Testing - Round 4

There was a discussion about this topic over at GPUgrid recently and no one there seemed.to offer anything in regards to a decrease in utilization. May be the way they run. On/off. Remember this is OpenCl on Cuda (for NVIDIA) so the fact that GPUgrid only runs around 75-89% on Windows may not apply here.

One reason why this project will be opt in specific. If you don't like it for how you use your computer, you won't have to run it. Same reason with the cautious listed for RAM and cep2

I'm just guessing but probably not. If anonymous platform is allowed then writing one and dropping it into the program file is all it would take. It would also be advantageous to tthose who don't want to run their GPU at 95+%

It's not that difficult. Once you have the parameters you like you just let it run.

While that is true this is a whole new ballgame. I'm sure there will be enough beta testing to get it right. Patience grasshopper. biggrin

Agreed: I have no intention of editing any files to run HCC tasks....WCG has been my number 1 choice for a long time, but POEM is pulling me away.... sad
