We just got the work flowing and the test is now running. Congrats to Bearcat for returning the first result from the beta test with a workunit completed in an elapsed time of 198 seconds!!!!! I feel lucky getting the 1st one completed. This was on a ATI 6950 with overdrive enabled but at it's lowest setting. Will have to play with the settings to see how much I can push it.
Crunching for humanity since 2007!

I got one on my 2nd Gen i7 quad-core... I only have the built-in Intel graphics, no card. When BOINC starts up, I see the "No usable GPUs found" message... so why did I even get one of the Betas?
----------------------------------------[Edit] Oh... It wasn't clear to me that there were CPU WU's in this Beta too... sorry about that! [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 14, 2012 12:13:45 AM] |

Probaply because it is a CPU beta and not a GPU beta. Both were issued today.

Maybe this is another side effect of the GPU Beta restriction, but no matter what, my clients asks for 300,000 plus seconds and just gets 1 SN2S at the time and each subsequent time hitting thr update button:

I allowed GPU while computer in use to get BETA_X0000131280849201112141247_2 using beta3 version 644 to start. I assume _2 means a re-send.

Congrats to the techs for getting the HCC GPU betas underway, especially while they are still dealing with the aftermath of the server upgrade.
----------------------------------------What is the intended credit allocation scheme for GPU work done? If the same credit per WU is given to those crunched on GPUs as is given to those crunched on CPUs, the problem may arise that many members will concentrate on GPU work and the CPU resources allocated to projects that do not have GPU versions may decrease. Although members' points tallies do get effectively depreciated over time as computers get faster, the introduction of GPGPU with such a credit scheme would make points tallies to date rather meaningless. It would also seem to me to be unfair to members who choose not to participate in GPGPU, since if GPGPU is as highly productive as is promised, the computing resources needed to complete a CPU WU are far greater than for an equivalent WU on a GPU. OTOH, if credit for GPU work was allocated according to the $$ costs of GPU hardware and the extra electricity used, determining these costs would be very difficult both immediately and over time. I know that these issues have already been discussed somewhere, but I don't recall reading a definitive outcome. -- Link? [Edit]: Just found informative recent post by knreed in nearby thread One wonders ....... (re. recent server upgrade). "... we will start using the new credit system. The aim of the new system is to better measure the efficiency of different computers and different application versions so that computers are assigned credit in a more consistent way - even across different operating systems or cpu vs gpu." I guess we'll see what The New Credit System comes up with ... [/Edit] [Edit #2]: Also noted the appearance of a new forum in the Support section: GPU Support Forum I expect we'll have some sticky posts there, eg types of GPU cards supported & their productivity & power consumption, instructions on how to set up and control GPU crunching, links to more information ... [/Edit] ------- knreed, at Beta test for Help Conquer Cancer with GPU Application Versions : "There are only GPU versions available for Windows at this time." Ambiguous. Implies that there are no CPU versions on Windows, and that there could be both types for the other OSes. Think he means "GPU versions are available only for Windows ..." Sorry Rickjb that I cannot find the link but there are now so many GPU threads it is almost impossible to find an individual post. However uplinger stated a couple of times in the past that it is WCG position that a wu is worth a set amount credits regardless of what it is run on. Run it on a cpu and get 30 credits, run it on a fast card and get 30 credits, run it on a slow card and get 30 credits. The difference of course is run time.
----------------------------------------If it took 1 hour on a CPU then you would get 30 credits/hour/cpu thread. If it took 2 minutes on a GPU you could do 30/hour and you would get 900 credits/hour/GPU. This did not work on the first group. I only got 3 but received 100 credits on two and 200 credits on one. After that Kevin posted that the 100-200 credits was an anomoly and they have subsequently got the credits down to 30 +/-. Since this Beta appeared suddenly this morning with almost no information about how it works, I think all of us are just waiting for the next group and figuring it out as we go. |

I solved a HCC file in 4 minutes 30secons or so. it said 1.00 GPU 0.82 CPU.
----------------------------------------the speed is amazing. normally it takes me almost 2 hours for a HCC file. edit: at this speed, the world will be fixed by breakfast time. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Robokapp at Mar 14, 2012 9:19:54 AM] |

Question for the techs.
----------------------------------------I have 1 GPU WU on a machine that doesn't have an OpenCL supported card. It won't start and probably never will. Should I abort it or just wait for it to run past the time limit and be resent?
In 1969 I took an oath to defend and protect the U S Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and Domestic. There was no expiration date.
