GPU load was 90% during the GPU portion and CPU load was 13% or one CPU core during the CPU portion. Kashie where do see these GPU%? I'm very, very new to GPU crunching (have only tested a few WUs at gpugrid and collatz to try it out) Sorry if asking dumb questions. My notebook with GT630M finished the wus in 20mins - way slower than wingmen. Does that suggest slow gpu or just poor setup on my part? I am unfamiliar with NVIDIA GPUs. I do not know how a GT630M should perform on this WCG OpenCL beta application or at any other BOINC project. From a vague memory of a post here I think perhaps NVIDIA GPUs may not perform as efficiently as ATI/AMD on this application. Because the application uses a fair bit of CPU, to give it a chance to perform as well as possible some people with multiple core CPUs choose to limit BOINC to one core less than the number of cores the CPU has. So "use at most 75% of the processors" setting for a quad core CPU or 87.5 % of the processors for an 8 core CPU. For ATI/AMD GPUs, GPU load percentage can be seen in MSI Afterburner program. It can also be seen in GPU-Z program. [Edit 2 times, last edit by kashie at Mar 14, 2012 10:03:56 PM] |

You can also use EVGA Precision to see what is happening on your card. |

To free or not to free a CPU core
Here's 2 results on a dual core with a stock HD5850 1) Both CPU cores running SN2S: 320 sec https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/devi...Log.do?resultId=856651450 2) One core free: 243 sec https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/devi...Log.do?resultId=856651447 |

Hi Copycat-Digital,
2 quick questions: 1) Is this a laptop? If so, is the graphics board overloading the cooling forcing a slowdown? 2) Do the dual cores have hyperthreading? Lawrence |

No - It's an old Core 2 Duo E4600 2.4GHz desktop with hyperthreading on running Win XP Pro 32 SP3

OpenCL apps tend to require more 'hidden' resources; those controlled by the CPU. So while the app may not require an extra CPU in itself, it does benefit from other apps not using resources. So when resources are more accessible the OpenCL app is expedited. This is a commonality of many OpenCL apps. Hyperthreaded systems in particular are more prone to such resource saturation. So, free a thread. On high end systems with Big GPU's freeing more than one thread is often of additional benefit when running OpenCL apps. Anyone experiencing 'downclocking' should consider reducing their shader (cuda core or stream processor) frequencies. A 10% reduction often results in a runtime reduction of no more than 1%, and prevents downclocking and failures (applies to both GPU types). GL
----------------------------------------E4600 is an LGA775 dual core, no HT ;) So we can now read other participants Result Logs - fantastic! [Edit 3 times, last edit by skgiven at Mar 14, 2012 11:25:19 PM] |

Nvidia driver 295.73 has some serious problems and I would encourage you not to use it. Same with ATI 12-2_XP32 driver Catalyst CC runs fine but Boinc Manager don't see the GPU. Tried it on 2 PCs with same result. Had to do an uninstall & reinstalled 12-1 clean to get it to run again another one My HD5850 failed the first few yesterday with ATI 11,4 driver ERROR: Kernel execution time estimate too high, exiting. Updated to 12,1 and the rest run fine I upgraded my ATI 6950 to 12.2 on Win7 64. Boinc does see it. Haven't received anymore betas to see if there are issues though.
Crunching for humanity since 2007!

I have a suggestion: Create a work unit that does nothing but make sure that a computer has all the correct hardware and software set up correctly to run the GPU work. I put together a rig to run GPU work and have no idea if the reason that I am not getting any work for the GPU is because there is no work or because I have got something messed up.
----------------------------------------Make sense? Any suggestions? Everyone have a great day! |

From my understanding all the work has been issued for the 1st Beta already. After the techs sort out the first batch, they will send out more, so the reason you are not getting work is probably because none are available for GPU at the moment.
----------------------------------------Its a good concept though, like a test work unit for the GPU. |

Well what I did was temporarily attach to GPUgrid or Collatz Conjecture and I got work units right away so have to assume that everything is fine at my end. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by LoneWolf_53 at Mar 15, 2012 2:37:07 AM] |
