Re: Work Now Available for Beta Test

Just received a few on a HD5750 with 1 cpu core idle.
I observed this with the GPU usage graph of Afterburner running and taskmanager to show CPU usage

The task started & after 14 seconds the GPU usage jumped to 98% - CPU 02
It reached 98% after 3 minutes when the GPU dropped to 0% and the CPU jumped to 25
It continued for another 2 minutes full CPU - 0 GPU before finishing with a total time of 5 minutes confused

Re: Work Now Available for Beta Test

I have an AMD 5870 in some other machines and it says:
3/14/2012 3:20:14 AM | | ATI GPU 0: ATI Radeon HD 5800 series (Cypress) (CAL version 1.4.1546, 1024MB, 2720 GFLOPS peak)
So the same thing it is NOT capable!!

Humm
My 5870,5850, and 5830 all got Beta Wu's.
Are you talking about the Drivers?

Re: Work Now Available for Beta Test

Here's the deal on OpenCl 1.1/1.2

If I am correct, it is v1.1, since both nvidia and AMD have not released official drivers yet supporting 1.2 AMDs site seem to imply that beta drivers are out for 1.2, but they are not "official" driver releases.

http://developer.amd.com/sdks/AMDAPPSDK/downloads/Pages/default.aspx

Oh.. and for those looking into buying new cards. For this project only, AMD looks like the winner (as far as estimated GFLOPS are concerned). In saying that, after doing some research on what Amazon and Newegg are pricing GPUs at, the 6870 ($165) looks like the best pick IMHO. It has a reported 500 GFLOP lead over the 6850 ($140-150). All other new cards go into the $200 range. (6870=2000 GFLOPS 6850=1500 GFLOPS)

Even with the recent drop in price in NVIDIA cards, due to Kepler being released in several weeks, my vote still goes to the 6870 for price/performace FOR THIS PROJECT ON WCG.

I still plan on purchasing on kepler GPU due to their more readied acceptance at other Boinc projects, GPUgrid for me, since no one knows how long WCG GPU project will last.

Hope this helps

Re: Work Now Available for Beta Test

Ah yes performance, good one Copycat-Digital, few people have gone into details of how their GPU tasks ran.

My HD 5870 with one CPU core free (7 BOINC cores) completed 8 tasks. They took 176, 193, 195, 195, 217, 168, 190 and 188 seconds to process, an average of 190 seconds.

GPU load was 90% during the GPU portion and CPU load was 13% or one CPU core during the CPU portion.

CPU time used was slightly longer than Total kernel time plus Total memory transfer time on all 8 tasks.

Current draw on VDDC peaked at a relatively low 29A, fan spun up only slightly and GPU core temp only rose to a maximum of 57 °C. Low current draw indicates a lower utilisation of GPU resources but that's not unusual for OpenCL applications. Means a lower power bill though which is good.

Total Run Time reported was about 88% of total elapsed time.

98% GPU load on a HD 5750 and 90% on a HD 5870 may indicate a small amount of throttling but it's not bad for a start and no fan whine is good for sleeping. Possibly means a lower GPU load for those with a HD 7950 or HD 7970 though, it seems only applications with CAL or IL level optimised code and/or adjustable parameters can give them a decent workout yet. Won't know for sure until someone with a Tahiti posts their performance results after some more tasks are released.

Nvidia driver 295.73 has some serious problems and I would encourage you not to use it. One of the big issues is that if you have your monitor set to go into sleep mode your GPU will stop crunching and you may not be able to recover from sleep mode without a reboot. I would recommend 290.53 or lower until Nvidia fixes the problems.

Kashie where do see these GPU%?
I'm very, very new to GPU crunching (have only tested a few WUs at gpugrid and collatz to try it out) Sorry if asking dumb questions.

My notebook with GT630M finished the wus in 20mins - way slower than wingmen. Does that suggest slow gpu or just poor setup on my part?

Same with ATI 12-2_XP32 driver
Catalyst CC runs fine but Boinc Manager don't see the GPU.
Tried it on 2 PCs with same result.
Had to do an uninstall & reinstalled 12-1 clean to get it to run again

another one
My HD5850 failed the first few yesterday with ATI 11,4 driver
ERROR: Kernel execution time estimate too high, exiting.

Updated to 12,1 and the rest run fine

Re: Work Now Available for Beta Test

@nanoprobe
Thanks, I will roll back the driver to 285.66 that came with the card.
That driver worked great but I had some problems with Windows Media Center and my TV Tuner and that is why I upgraded to the newer driver. But I rairly use Windows so for now I'll just go back to 285.66.
I only temporarily switched to Windows to try to grab some of the GPU Betas wink
