there's no way I could assemble it myself.. I don't have any knowledge of how to do that.. I don't think the processor matters.. but all of the ones I have now are Intel.. Mike.. Buying the parts and assembling your own computer is not as difficult as it sounds. There are plenty of people here (myself included) that could help you. IMHO you can get more bang for the buck that way and you won't have all that preinstalled junk that come with a Dell, HP or other.

there's no way I could assemble it myself.. Many, many years ago, I assembled a shortwave radio from a kit. Two key parts to my success with a task I had never done before were the very detailed step by step instructions and a guide to how to properly solder. I doubt there's any soldering involved in assembling a computer these days. I would expect it involves screwing parts into a case and plugging in cables, albeit often tiny ones. Having replaced the fan in a couple of laptops over the years emphasized the importance of taking it slow and physically laying out the parts you remove in a pattern that matches their source location. Given the money, buying computer parts is no big deal. There are plenty of places willing to sell them. So, I'd agree with what you said. However, I suspect the thing that stops a lot of folks from trying to build their own is feeling that they have enough knowledge to buy the RIGHT combination of parts. I know that places like Tiger Direct sell what they call kits. I've seen them advertise kits for a quad machine for 300-400 dollars if I recall correctly. Perhaps something like that might be a good place to start. You don't have to choose which parts to get, just take what they send and put it together. If that goes well, then one could start learning how to properly choose the right parts. |

For those of you crunching CEP2 on Windows, you may want to pay attention to whether your active WUs have checkpointed recently before you reboot or recycle BOINC. It looks like this project doesn't checkpoint near as often as some of the others, given the limited sampling I've done so far.

Keithhenry is correct as a kit may be best place to start. Having just assembled my first comuter it was very important to be patient. I would assemble each night as much as I could before it came to a point I did not fully understand. Then the next day I would come back and it usually made sense. If not I sought help which there is plenty of. I would say you get a much better quality machine for for less with the satisfaction of building it your self. If you do build one with drier weather coming make sure to be grounded so static electricity does not fry your machine!

Also, if you have Skype you can set up a face to face meeting to answer questions and assist in the assembly.

I have to hurry to get this morning post in the morning.
---------------------------------------- Good Morning MOT Looking at the posts here about a new cruncher, I have to agree with them all. Someone pointed out that you can get a kit. That is true, but like most everything else, you get what you pay for. Those kits that cost $400 -500 get you a Quad but one that uses more power and is slower than some of the faster ones. Both Judson and I just built machines and you could use one of our parts list to build one. Skype is a possibility, TeamViewer is another that I use to support folks sometimes. It is not reasonable to ship assembled computers unless they are built to travel (Dell, HP etc.). That is; that one of us could not build you one and ship it to you. If you can pick it up in Dallas, I can build one for you and meet you there with it. Dubby....??? Where are you... (I bet he is in La visiting his sister). Go Team Go. ![]() |
