I want to get a new machine.. don't know what to buy.. and can't find many websites where I can find a multi-core machine.. Dr. Mike.. There are many possibilities. I suppose the first place to start is to define what all the machine will be used for. Will it be a multi-purpose machine or a cruncher only? Do you have a preference as to processor type? Do you have an amount that you want to spend? With the answers to those, we can begin to narrow down the recommendations. I wish doc Somerville and I had been able to compare throughput so we would have that to guide us. |

I would probably use the new machine for crunching only..

I would probably use the new machine for crunching only.. Dr. Mike.. OK.. Well that helps. We can then assume that you do not need a large disk drive or a big video card; likewise you can get by with one DVD drive or use an external one. Also, you do not need a "card reader". What you need is a high air flow case, a fast quad or hexcore, about 4 to 6 gigiabytes of ddr3 memory and a good solid mobo that will allow you to overclock a bit. Now comes the difficult part and I wish I knew the answers. Do you want to go with a AMD or an INTEL processor? Wait wait... I forgot to ask, do you want to assemble it yourself? If not, then we need to go pick out a Dell, Alienware or HP or some such machine that you can buy assembled. there's no way I could assemble it myself.. I don't have any knowledge of how to do that..
----------------------------------------I don't think the processor matters.. but all of the ones I have now are Intel.. Mike.. ![]() |

Of all my crunchers I found that are off the shelf, the Intel servers were the best and easiest to find. I bought a Dell dual processor 2.83 Ghz and it generates about 27,000 points/day. Bought it 2 years ago for about $3,500 but should be much cheaper today.
