Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 46smilesmile

Morning Team

Bear with me I've just moved into my new humble abode

Telephone line will be activated on the 28th - then I'll get my broadband order in as soon as I get the dial tone biggrin

In the meantime you would be amazed how many open wifi access points you can find in a flat wink

my SSID when I go live will, as always, be www.worldcommunitygrid.org

Just a 17 mins walk to work. You should see the stupid smile I'm wearing smile

Normal crunching servce will be resumed soon biggrin

Good Morning MOT coffee coffee Dave B...where are you?

Dave A. For some strange reason I can imagine that smile of yours. When we lived in the UK it was in Cobham Surrey (Due to the American Community School being there...Harcourt, 10 Tudor Close -- Oxshott station to Waterloo station most mornings..then, bolstered by a freshly baked in the station almond croissant, across York Rd, looking first right then left and into the building). Though you may have told us, I don't recall your town.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 46smilesmile

Today's filesystem outage only lasted for an hour or two so I doubt it will have any impact on us today. Weather-wise, we're getting some needed rain here but not enough. With Halloween falling on a Sunday this year, there's the debate once again about whether to celebrate it on Saturday or Sunday. The comments folks make about it on the news sites make for entertaining reading. biggrin

I bet it is entertaining. People can get all worked up over that sort of thing.

Speaking of getting worked up, I found out some things today that really surprised me. Not that Dubby being right surprises me but being soooo right for reasons I never suspected does. It looks like, due primarily to the compiler involved, most of the projects run better on Unix based machines than on Windows based machines. Perhaps the most significant difference is in the HCC project. I understand that, primarily due to the compiler used to compile the science program...not the operating system itself, you can run close to 2 times as many HCC work units on a given system if you run Unix rather than Windows. Sooooooooo...... Dubby, I now understand and join in your enthusiasm for Ubuntu for crunching. Now, if they change compilers or something else then this can also change. I suppose I need to keep my eye on the ball a little closer. This is a big D'OH (Homer Simpson) moment and as Homer says, "Facts are meaningless. You could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true!"€

For those interested in a few more details, Check out this thread

Edit: I guess that most folks have not seen the new switch in the device profile that allows you to unrestrict the new default restriction in the CEP2 for Unix based and perhaps in the near future, windows based machines. More Here

Edit2 Correction of special characters.

As a certain pointy-eared fellow has been known to say - fascinating! Is it possible to run Windows as a VM on Ubuntu so we can still use the Dark Lord's gifts where required? wink
