How many of you actually purchase computers for the unique purpose of crunching for WCG? If so, how many of them did you buy just for that task? Rej I have purchased computers for the sole purpose of crunching for WCG. I do not know how many. I suspect somewhere between 10 and 20 since joining WCG in 2004 (and still others before that for use with grid.org and SETI). About half (guess) of these computers are temporarily used for website development and other stuff. The older ones get moved off to relatives and most of those continue to do WCG stuff for a time. This is a hobby/addiction/practice/weakness/habit/failing that my family (sans my wife of 47 years ) really appreciates as they benefit from the trickledown. I suppose this explains a lot. |

I buy parts here and there and put them together to run as open blades and upgrade as funds permit. 6 so far. That's probably going to be my limit. I can only hide the electric bills from my wife for so long.

I never purchase a PC just for crunching. However I have 5 PC in my house that do work 24/ 7 on WCG. The others are at friends place (about 10). Call it the salary for servicing their machines. They are all aware that the prog is on their PC.

Rej - I have one system that was purpose built from odds and ends that is 99.9% dedicated to BOINC projects. I have 3 other systems that contribute but are used for other things. This can cause the hours / points / credits to fluctuate quite a bit. For instance, my system at work (yes, I have my employer's permission) might only contribute 2 or 3 hours during the day as I run a lot of applications that are processor and memory intensive. Fortunately, I can let that system run almost 24/7, so it contributes during off hours. - D |

I have bought perhaps 5 computers mostly for WCG and 2 of 5 soley for WCG. I just, an hour ago finished to the point it actually turns on, my first home build computer! Best feeling I have had in a while. Now as time permits getting all the software loaded. It is soley for WCG and that I always wanted to build one from scratch.

Nanoprobe - Could you clarify a bit what you mean by "open blades"? Do you mean open as in not proprietary or something else? It's just a term I use for a cruncher that runs without being in a tower. I built a cabinet with 4 shelves that is installed in my upstairs bedroom closet. 3 shelves have 2 crunchers each and the 4th self is for a KVM switch, a surge protector and an 8 port switch that connects to my home network. It's still a work in progress that I continue to tweak.
