Thanks for the comments on new badge levels - we're thinking about expanding those beyond the current levels. No anticipated release date yet - we're early in the design phase for this enhancement. thank u for the great admining of the site! also, always keep in mind for the future...and post some "goals for us", than at the moment r unachievable...but will be achieved in the future with computer upgrades... ;) |

Having a few computers at my semi-disposal means I have been able to get a few years of crunching time rather quickly. (Good)
----------------------------------------I have been depressed though to see that with Boinc projects, not just WCG, people don't seem to stay long (another discussion, not meaning for rabbit trail). Case in point my signature shows that despite less than 4 years run time, I am roughly in the top 5% (time, points, returns). I don't mean this to brag as I don't feel I have earned the right to do so. If anything I am sad more people don't stay longer which would hence force me to give something like 20 years before I come to the top 5%. I would love a situation like that as it means more people are helping as these projects are getting that much closer to completion. Long story short, not many people could get badges beyond the 2 year sapphire badge. But as the lions share of work gets done by a minority (not a surprise) they should earn the ability to show that off (which is the purpose of badges in the first place). This also means the minority that exists is doing most of the work and that is well worth it to give them the extra perks as it is in the best interests of WCG. I am all for either the colors changing (florescent was mentioned, neon possible, same idea) or simply adding the years # to a corner of the sapphire badge (5, 10, 15, 20, ...). The second option doesn't change the color scheme so people can have all the same color keeping their nice pattern, but still show the # of years put forth. Cheers~ [Edit 1 times, last edit by Seoulpowergrid at Apr 24, 2014 2:09:27 AM] |

Anther reason for adding additional badges is that computing power has increased considerably (I'll let somebody else figure out how much) in the last 10 years (remember... this year is the 10th birthday of WCG ). Therefore, it is a lot easier to make it to sapphire now than 10 years ago.

My idea for a badge, it would have only the size of the old badge on 40x40 be modified to have enough space for the numbers.

But don't forget that badges are based on runtime, so it's the number of cores/threads you can run rather than the computing power in a thread. I agree that it's now easier to make it to sapphire, but it's because of the availability of multi-core machines. For the sake of completeness, let's not forget in all this that increased computing power for whatever reason gets more research done . |

I know it's probably never going to happen (as I and many others were told so several times), but I have this idea I can't get out of my head, so I need to say it out loud: the new badge could be "stone"...

It can even be a Rolling Stone...just as long as it's there. I'm not picky.
