I think participation badges would be great... it would be a good incentive for newcomers to keep crunching for the next badge level. I have invited two friends to participate in WCG and they both (separately) asked me: "So when do I get a badge ?". They seemed a little bit disappointed and discouraged of not being recognized for their effort. I know, later on, when they get used to the crunching rhythm, this will pass, but the initial impression of their effort was not that good.

They get a badge after they have contributed 14 days of work to a single project. Simple answer. Where's the fire? |

There is no fire. It was a comment based on reactions from newcomers. I apologize for not specifying that they do understand how the badge award works. Also, not everybody has your computing power and getting to bronze takes a long time for some people.
----------------------------------------In a nutshell, I support the creation of the participation badge. CJSL |

And a lot of us do, but it's not going to happen.
----------------------------------------But the next best thing is, have them build their on and put it in their sig using skgiven's post (above). |

I can understand that for some crunchers, ex: small older laptop, that just crunches WCG on day hours as a screen saver, it may take a long long time to get there. And until you get the bronze you feel you are nobody or your participation is not recognized.
----------------------------------------To get to those 14 days when I started I had to validate about 80 WUs. The truth is that the bottom limit is 1 Unit. Once you have validated 1 Unit indeed you are rightfully part of the big family. An if you leave after having validated say 50 units we remain thankful that you participated and if a thousands do like you then with drops we will indeed get to rivers and lakes. So yes I agree that at the moment you have validated 1 Unit, you should get the participation badge. The signature is there for that. On the other hand those like me would also love to have badges for after Sapphire, but if the priority is to choose between investing precious manpower in designing badges or projects, then there is no doubt I prefer the projects. I have choosen the golden pearl badge for the 100-200 year runtime span. I have not yet decided what comes after. I still have a little time.... not too much but a little |

Without a post there's My Grid as recognition, but ad interim, maybe the webmaster could connect the profile link at bottom of posts, for those members signed in, to the My Grid table or tally. We presently can do it the hard way [and it is] by going to the member comparison link or provide an easy connect to the My Grid page so members, and particularly forum supporting members and CA's can do a much quicker checkout, such as for those that come to tell that they're not seeing results. Think we're way past the ''it's a secret''. You post, have accepted the forum rules by that token, and agree with that to show your stats. Not yet seen an opt-out not to show badges on the forums ;P.
Meantime, there continues that odd empty space between member name and badges. What could be done with that? Place overall contribution certificate symbols :? --//-- |

Suggestion: Introduce a badge for less than 14 days but at least 1 work unit done - and show the CPU time below the badges in text form. This could recognize both minimal and past-sapphire contribution - and make it less frustrating if a project ends while being close to the next badge level :-)

...show the CPU time below the badges... Hm, then why not use the empty space that SekeRob mentioned, and put there the cumulated number of processed minutes/days/years over all projects. This way the huge problem of not being recognised for crunching 1 WU is solved. For what the historical projects concern, well, if you were not here, or didn't know, or were too late, or didn't crunch enough, then you weren't here, didn't know or were too late or didn't crunch enough. I crunched (calendar)years for Entropia and UD before I knew of WCG. After I knew of WCG, I delayed the transfer to Boinc. Hey, I didn't know "back then" these would shut down. There is no need to be recognised for not knowing the future. |
