Remember the problems DM had with his IBuyPower not to mention the bright blue "seachlight" on it? The machine is great but I still think the company sucks! BTW: I'm glad you did not recommend looking at Crapway. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Dataman at Apr 18, 2009 2:27:50 AM] |

I'm looking at Prolimatech Megahalems. http://www.jab-tech.com/Prolimatech-Megahalems-CPU-Cooler-775-1366-pr-4428.html Guys, keep in mind who this if for. Dr. Mike is not the computer geek like you guys. He would probably fare best long-term with something pre-built from one of the major makers that is maybe high-end stock and is going to be solid and reliable with at least good support in the eventual case of it being needed. He doesn't need the screaming bleeding edge. With a desktop, one thing to keep in mind is making sure that you have some extra expansion slots (at least a couple). Adding a wireless adapter card will most likely use one. Down the road when he wants to get a bit adventureous, he can add the GPU card. Remember the problems DM had with his IBuyPower not to mention the bright blue "seachlight" on it? Dr. Mike, for reliability, you'll do well with Apple or Lenovo. Dell is getting it back together too. The folks with the best desktops aren't going to always have the best laptops either. Stay away from Gateway. Looking at the latest from Consumer Reports, for desktops, Apple, Dell and Lenovo were the best on combined value and reliability. For $1500, you should be able to get a nice desktop for what you want to do. As for the monitor, I was pointed at Acer. Got a nice 17 inch (or is it 19?, it's big) for 150-175 from Tiger. Late last summer when I bought the desktop for my daughter, C2Ds were common but I upgraded to the quad CPU for about $100 or so. It seems like quads are the norm now so maybe someone has an option to upgrade to the i7? With the $500 you'll have left, you can use 40-50 on the wireless adapter card, 100 on a decent all-in-one printer/scanner/copier/fax (150 if you want the printer wireless too) and a bit to spare on a longer warranty or some extra software you want. Also, warranty-wise, laptops tend to require that they get shipped back to the manufacturer for service or you can try one of the independent service places that is part of their warranty network. With desktops, you can easily get on-site warranty support so they come to you. Beyond 9-5 will cost more but for your use, 9-5 should be more that fine. No need for 24x7. If you got a quad instead of an i7 machine, I would say that you could save a few hundred dollars and reinvest that money into graphics. GPU crunching is the wave of the future and even WCG is coming around to that. |

GPU crunching is the wave of the future and even WCG is coming around to that. I must have missed something. Is there word about GPU crunching at WCG? Also, I suggested a Dell Studio XPS with and I7, 3 Gigs etc for just over a grand. I have been running one of these for 3-4 months and it is a real heavy producer for WCG running 8 WUs at once. |

I think that the WCG has to be thinking very seriously about GPU crunching! |

Can Windows Server 2008 crunch (WCG and GPUGrid)? If I remember correctly, it will do WCG but I don't think it will do GPUGrid. You could post a question there. Morning. 81F today ... so much for spring. ![]() ![]() |

Welcome gr8Budah! Stop by and leave a comment or 3. Glad to have you aboard!
----------------------------------------Oh.. and someone said somthing that made me think that they did not know an i7 was a quad. It is; It has Hyper-Threading technology so that it effectively runs more than 4 tasks at a time. Experience has shown me that I need to keep 8 tasks running to ensure that all the processing power is being used up. It has the stock cooler ....and stock everything and runs just fine. Dr. Mike: I hate to sound like a commercial for Dell. I love their computers and have told them many times that I buy their stuff in spite of their "support" (which is a cruel joke at best). Anyway, check THIS out. |

Mine are older, but I have both a Dell Laptop and Desktop (Core2 Duos) that I bought 2 to 2 1/2 years ago that I have had no problems with. Both have run at 100% 24/7 since I got them.[/commercial] |

My first two Dells arrived from Dell with issues, Windows crashing after owning the pc for two days, I went through like 6 cd drives. Also, my parents have had mixed experience with Dell laptops, but report that their newest Dell lappie isn't half bad. |
