I'm looking at Prolimatech Megahalems. http://www.jab-tech.com/Prolimatech-Megahalems-CPU-Cooler-775-1366-pr-4428.html Guys, keep in mind who this if for. Dr. Mike is not the computer geek like you guys. He would probably fare best long-term with something pre-built from one of the major makers that is maybe high-end stock and is going to be solid and reliable with at least good support in the eventual case of it being needed. He doesn't need the screaming bleeding edge. With a desktop, one thing to keep in mind is making sure that you have some extra expansion slots (at least a couple). Adding a wireless adapter card will most likely use one. Down the road when he wants to get a bit adventureous, he can add the GPU card. Remember the problems DM had with his IBuyPower not to mention the bright blue "seachlight" on it? Dr. Mike, for reliability, you'll do well with Apple or Lenovo. Dell is getting it back together too. The folks with the best desktops aren't going to always have the best laptops either. Stay away from Gateway. Looking at the latest from Consumer Reports, for desktops, Apple, Dell and Lenovo were the best on combined value and reliability. For $1500, you should be able to get a nice desktop for what you want to do. As for the monitor, I was pointed at Acer. Got a nice 17 inch (or is it 19?, it's big) for 150-175 from Tiger. Late last summer when I bought the desktop for my daughter, C2Ds were common but I upgraded to the quad CPU for about $100 or so. It seems like quads are the norm now so maybe someone has an option to upgrade to the i7? With the $500 you'll have left, you can use 40-50 on the wireless adapter card, 100 on a decent all-in-one printer/scanner/copier/fax (150 if you want the printer wireless too) and a bit to spare on a longer warranty or some extra software you want. Also, warranty-wise, laptops tend to require that they get shipped back to the manufacturer for service or you can try one of the independent service places that is part of their warranty network. With desktops, you can easily get on-site warranty support so they come to you. Beyond 9-5 will cost more but for your use, 9-5 should be more that fine. No need for 24x7. |

But he said $2000 budget.. so I thought, three video cards to do some nice GPUGrid crunching. i7 has 8 cores for WCG. Didn't think of the wireless though. Besides, my list was a joke. There's no way he would be able to get the parts together. I'll leave the finding the comp to you guys. ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Apr 18, 2009 2:13:43 AM] |
