Which projects were you thinking of? All the distributed mathematical projects I know of are trying to computationally find numerical solutions for classical problems.
Creating new algorithms is valuable, of course - but it's not pure mathematics, and huge computer resources are not really required to test the algorithms. Not that many mathematicians are likely to agree.... I know my alma mater was investing in a supercomputer for their mathematics department. |

Yes, those are valid points about mathematics, I suppose. And mind you, I have nothing against the idea of solving those problems. I understand that in some cases a new mathematical proof can lead to a less computationally intensive method of solving real-world problems. But it seems like a very indirect approach to me. I'd hate to see a huge amount of processing time used up on that. Some may be appropriate, but not a lot.
I also realize that some people just think those problems are worthwhile in their own right, and people certainly have the right to donate their flops wherever they see fit. But my personal goal is to benefit the planet and all it's inhabitants, and my money is on the more direct approach. |

"all but about 2 of the worthy projects that exist are on WCG" That's a very high horse you ride. Many will differ with you vehemently. ... snip I am truly and honestly open to suggestions about what other projects are worthy. I'm looking for projects that save our planet (like CEP), rather than saving individual humans (curing diseases, etc.) I admit this is just my individual definition of worthy. There may be many projects I'm not aware of; I admit I'm far from the most knowledgeable person on the subject of the "boincosphere". So far, there have been 2 suggestions in this thread, (ibercivis' fusion project and the virtual prarie) I actively checked both of them, but neither is available for Mac... CPDN is worthy ( my opinion only ), but hogs my machine. I ran a few units through but then detached when CEP came online for mac. The next best thing (my opinion only) is curing diseases and feeding people, which there are plenty of on WCG. Sorry, I'm not trying to be on a high horse or disparage great projects like DDDT or NRFTW I just give them 2nd priority. There must be other possibilities... Better battery chemistry for electric cars? Finding catalysts for binding CO2 for sequestration? Tracking dangerous near-earth objects? I dunno, I'm not a scientist. If anyone knows of projects like that, let me know. In the meanwhile I'll crunch whatever else is here on wcg until CEP has some more WUs. ![]() |

Hello headybrew,
The Distributed Computing projects currently available are listed at http://distributedcomputing.info/projects.html Lawrence |

If you're willing to consider pure science projects that might have eco-benefits (such as battery chemistry), have you looked at QMC, Spinhenge, or Magnetism@Home?
(I haven't checked whether any of these support Macs.) |

One of Yoyo@home 's sub-projects is Evolution@home which simulates different types of populations and focuses on the analysis of human mitochondrial DNA.
